GREAT BEGINNINGS

Powerball has been running for over 30 years.

According to History of Powerball page on the Powerball website, the first Powerball drawing took place on April 22, 1992, following the rebranding of the original Lotto America.

Tickets were available in 15 jurisdictions, including Delaware, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Washington, D.C., West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Steps to Claim a Powerball Prize

There are different steps to claiming a Powerball prize depending on whether the winning ticket was purchased online or in a store and based on the value of the ticket.

According to How to Claim Powerball Winnings Page on the Powerball website, all online prizes will be paid directly to the winner’s online lottery account.

Winners should receive a notification or email letting them know if they have won a prize.

Details can also be viewed in your account after your numbers have been checked against the results. Winners can then choose whether to withdraw their winnings or apply the funds to future entries.

The steps for claiming prizes from a retailer depend on the amount of money won and where the winner signed up.

Winners will only be able to redeem their prize in the state where they purchased the ticket.

Typically, winners can claim smaller prizes from lottery outlets. However, if a store doesn’t have enough money to pay them, it may be instructed to receive its earnings from a different retailer or claims center.

The steps to claim a prize based on ticket value include:

  • $599 or less
    • Winners can generally claim prize payments of less than $600 from an authorized lottery retailer. They should check their local retailer’s store policies, because some stores may not have enough cash for prizes greater than $100 or have rules about the amount of cash that is available to employees.
    • Winners can also claim their prize by mail by sending their ticket along with some identification and a winner’s claim form, which is available at their local lottery office. The ticket must be sent to the address provided by the state lottery in the winner’s jurisdiction.
  • $600 or more
    • Winners can claim payments of $600 or more at their local district office, claims center or lottery headquarters.
    • Winners can also claim their prize by mail at the address provided by the state lottery. The largest prize amount winners can claim by mail depends on their state.

Jackpot winners must contact their jurisdiction’s lottery headquarters and claim the prize in person.

Players had to choose five main numbers from 1 to 45 and one Powerball from another set of 1 to 45.

The minimum jackpot was $2 million and the drawings were held in Des Moines, Iowa.
