Donna Smith of Huntersville, North Carolina, won her lucky prize at a convenience store.

She bought a Triple 777 ticket, a scratch-off ticket that costs $10.

After scratching, she discovered that she had won the top prize of US$700,000.

She showed up at a lottery claims office on Monday to collect her winnings.

After state and federal tax withholdings, she walked away with $500,503.

TO CALM DOWN

Donna told North Carolina Education Lottery She bought the ticket on impulse.

“This is exactly what my mind told me to buy,” she said.

She said she loves the lottery and has been playing for years.

When she won, it was a shock.

“I thought I was going to have a heart attack,” she said. “I had to calm down.”

She said she would pay for the house and car with the money.

After that, she plans to donate some to her church and help her family, she told lottery officials.

She received payment in one lump sum.

Lottery officials confirmed to the US Sun that there is no annual fee option for prizes under $1 million in the state.

LOTTO LUCK

Although Donna had to shell out nearly $200,000 to the government after winning big, others lost even larger sums.

A Massachusetts lottery winner recently shared how his $4 million prize was reduced to $2.6 million.

It all came down to your choice of a one-time payment.

Some winners manage to avoid this by charging an annual fee, which has its drawbacks.

A Virginia winner recently shared how he managed to avoid losing his winnings to taxes.

A lottery winner said he was confused and lost money in the one-off payment.
