COSTCO is known throughout North America for its deals and bulk purchase items.

The members-only wholesaler occasionally offers luxury items in addition to your usual groceries.

A recent member shared a photo of a $40,000 wine bottle set sign at your local store.

The sign shows a photo of the bottles, which are not displayed in the store.

Its price says the set costs $39,999.99.

The user titled the post “I’m not a wine person. Why is it so expensive?”

The bottles were from an elite French vineyard, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

Redditors gathered to review the wine, for sale in Mountain View, California.

The post received more than 8,000 upvotes and 2,000 comments in less than 12 hours.

BUYERS’ REACTION

Several members were shocked by the high quality wine.

“It’s a super limited production Burgundy wine that is considered by many people to be the best wine in the world,” said one of them.

Some were confused by the price.

I canceled my Costco membership after being reprimanded by workers for breaking rules, the ‘crazy policies’ solidified this

“I don’t want to criticize Costco or its customers, but who the hell goes to a big box store famous for its low prices and $1.50 hot dogs to buy a $40,000 bottle of wine?” one Redditor asked.

“Billionaires buy wine at Costco, is it for employees to charge?” another asked.

Another hit the store signage.

“It’s crazy to see that .99 pricing trick on something so close to a lot of people’s annual salary,” they said.

Another member shamed anyone who spent thousands on wine.

“Anyone who spends that much on a bottle of wine should feel bad about themselves,” they said.

Many also questioned the true value of wine.

“I don’t think I will ever believe that something that can be consumed in one sitting like this can be worth so much money,” said one. “For that much money, I would expect superpowers.”

Members also joked about the wine’s unlikely placement at Costco.

“Honestly, honey, I just bought a roast chicken,” one of them said.

COSTCO MANIA

Costco has been shocking shoppers with more than just prices.

Some customers balked at the chain’s increasingly strict rules.

A member recently shared why he canceled his membership after allegedly being reprimanded in the store.

Others have had problems with the network’s scan-and-go capabilities.

Some fear that new crackdowns on membership dropouts could cause queues.

Others said they were overcharged by the store.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.
