@Walmart Why are half the cash registers closed everywhere I go??? and half of the cash registers will be card only/no cash back,” Little Miss Pretty (@kalynwydd) he wrote in a post on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.

“What is up with that???”

Walmart’s customer service profile quickly responded to the post.

“This is an experience we don’t want our customers to have, Kalyn,” they wrote. “Can you DM us with more details about your experience?”

Walmart’s self-checkout machines have been the subject of several online complaints.

An angry customer recently revealed that he left his cart in the middle of the store when he realized that the only way to complete his purchase was through the machines.

“I will not use self-checkout. I went to a Walmart that didn’t have a single breath checker, just helpers in the self-checkout line,” Roger Douglass (@RogerDouglass83) he wrote in a post in X.

“I left my cart there and left”, they concluded.

The post was a response to a social media thread asking users what the worst part of grocery shopping was.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the upgrades, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

“I won’t buy from a store that doesn’t have real boxes,” Paul (@pstarr779) he responded.

“I’m not paid to be a cashier. Fk Walmart,” he added sarcastically.

Walmart has also been criticized for its receipt checkers.

Many customers have lashed out at the megachain, arguing that if the company trusts them to scan their items, they shouldn’t have to double-check their receipts.

A customer refused to wait in line to leave the store after scanning his own items.

“I will not stop!” a buyer stated about receipt checks on a Facebook publish.

“Either their employee has already called my stuff and they don’t trust yours, or I probably did their job without a discount.

“I was observed by a camera and I have a receipt. I’m not queuing to leave the store right now.”

The user’s response was to a post that said, “You’re soft if you let them check your receipt at Walmart.”
