ANOTHER CVS location has closed its doors after the company closed others in the area as it continues to clean stores across the country.
In 2021, the popular pharmacy brand announced major closures, targeting 900 locations.
In 2024, 300 closures have not yet occurred.
However, the company announced earlier this year that it intended to close its remaining stores by April.
Stores are still closing across the U.S., including a store in Peoria Heights, Illinois — about 80 miles north of Springfield, according to Peoria Newspaper Star.
Residents must say goodbye to the location at 4521 North Prospect Road.
Amy Thibault, a CVS spokeswoman, said the company’s decision to close the location was “difficult,” according to the outlet.
She also said the company tried to balance how it could maintain pharmaceutical services, but struggled due to the state of the local market, the absence of residents and the large number of competitors in the area.
Anyone with prescriptions at the location will now be able to pick them up at the 1200 West Main Street location, a five-mile drive from downtown Peoria Heights.
Store employees will also be offered comparable roles within the company.
OTHER LOCAL CLOSURES
CVS has closed three other locations in Peoria in the past five years.
One location closed in fall 2019, another in summer 2021, and the third in late 2022.
With the closure of North Prospect Road, the city will now have just five locations.
Peoria residents can still shop at the Campustown store on the corner of Main and University streets across from Bradley University, the Schnucks stores on North University and the store on North Centerway Drive, according to the outlet.
There are also locations inside Target at the Glen Hollow Shopping Center and on Pear Tree Lane at the corner of War Memorial Drive and Big Hollow Road.
‘HARD DECISION’
Many CVS locations are boarded up across the US, including a location on the Upper East Side in New York City.
CVS Closings
In addition to the Troy location, several other CVS stores have recently closed or are scheduled to close soon.
Clair Shores, Macomb, Michigan – May 9
Greater Binghamton, New York – May 21
Historic Northeast, Kansas City, Missouri – June 13
Bulls Head, Staten Island, New York – June 19
The store at 1241 Lexington Ave., near East 84th Street, closed on May 16, the location reported. Correction.
It closed after two more in the area were shut down in September 2023 and January 2024.
Thibault gave a nearly identical statement for all three closures.
She said it was a “difficult decision” but “almost 60” sites still remain in the area.
“Local market dynamics, population shifts, community store density, and ensuring there are other geographic access points to meet community needs” were the reasons she gave for the decisions.
CVS also blamed theft for rampant closures across the country.
