CONSUMERS could receive money from a $2 million settlement involving a major deodorant recall.

Some Suave brand deodorants may have been sold with high levels of benzene, a cancer-causing chemical.

Unilever, which makes Suave deodorant, recalled some of its products in March 2022 after an internal review showed elevated levels of benzene in product samples, according to the settlement website.

Now, anyone who purchased the products — even after the recall date — can receive their money back.

The deadline to file a claim is quickly approaching.

All claims must be made by July 15th.

  • Gentle Fresh Aerosol Antiperspirant with 24 Hour Protection

Products must have been purchased between January 1, 2018 and March 7, 2024.

You can get money whether or not you have proof of purchase.

However, the amount varies depending on whether you have receipts.

Anyone who makes a claim with proof of purchase will receive the purchase price of each product.

Those without proof of purchase can earn US$3.29 for up to three products.

If you received a refund for products during the 2022 recall period, the settlement amount will be reduced by the amount of your refund.

These numbers could change, however.

If the claims submitted do not add up to the total settlement amount, any remaining funds will be disbursed evenly.

Claims can be archived online.

What is a class action settlement?

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or “classes,” a way to come together in court.

These lawsuits are often filed by one or a few people who allege that a company or other entity has harmed a large group of people.

When a lawsuit becomes a class action, it extends to all “class members,” or people who may have similar claims to those who filed the lawsuit.

Companies often settle class actions – offering payment to class members who typically waive their right to pursue legal action by accepting money.

These payment agreements often include statements from the defendant denying wrongdoing. Companies tend to settle class actions to avoid the costs of further litigation.

Pollution, discrimination or false advertising are some examples of what can lead to a class action lawsuit at a company’s door.
