The increase in receipt checks at many stores has been the subject of much criticism online.

The anti-theft measure was adopted by businesses in an effort to curb rampant retail theft.

Major retailers defended the security measure and several other similar policies.

Not only do they claim this prevents theft, but it also helps ensure no items are double-charged or scanned incorrectly.

However, that hasn’t stopped shoppers from taking to social media to complain, claiming receipt checks increase the time it takes them to leave the store or make them feel like thieves.

A shopper recently shared a frustrating experience with the anti-theft measure at her local Ross store.

“I’ve shopped at Ross forever after waiting in a checkout line looking after a long line of people,” Ramona Maltby boiled Monday on Facebook.

“We were stopped at the door again to show my receipt. I said ‘you can see from the record what the purpose of this is,’” she continued.

“She didn’t look in my bag or check the tickets, she just put a blue check mark on my receipt.”

“I pointed out that after I left the cash register and paid for the items that belonged to me and not Ross, they lost a customer forever,” concluded Maltby.

The New Jersey native’s post was met with approval, with one person stating “I don’t blame you.”

Ross did not immediately respond to US Sun’s request for comment.

The discount retailer isn’t alone when it comes to angry customers.

Walmart has often faced the wrath of shoppers frustrated with receipt checks.

Some even claimed that the measure makes them feel like “hostages”.

“I know the few hurt the lives of the many, but I hate being held hostage by Walmart door receipts,” said one X/Twitter user. he wrote on the social media platform, sharing a link to a US Sun article on the subject.

Others said they completely ignore the request.

“When they say they need to see my receipt, I think, yeah, not today,” one customer he wroteon Facebook.

A Lawyer’s Top 5 Receipt Checking Tips

Los Angeles attorney Camron Dowlatshahi spoke with The US Sun about receipt checks and a customer’s rights and options when asked to show their receipt.

  1. There has been a lot of debate surrounding the legality of a retailer asking to see your receipt, but if it’s in the store, it’s completely legal. “Apparently there is nothing illegal about this. You are still on the company premises and the reason for doing this is to avoid theft”, confirms Dowlatshahi.
  2. However, if they’re kicking you out of the store, that changes things, Dowlatshahi said. “Location is important,” he explained. “If you’re outside the store, you’re in the parking lot and they come and start accusing you of stealing and that you have to show the receipt, I think it’s a little bit of a different situation because now you’re in your way.”
  3. Although customers can say no to receipt checks, it can cause problems if you do so and the store suspects you of stealing. “You might say no, maybe it will create an unnecessary hassle for you because now you might have the police coming to your house and following up,” Dowlatshahi said.
  4. If you’re being blocked from leaving a store because you refused a receipt check, you may have legal action – but the store must have detained you for a long time. “Let’s say it’s for hours, that’s certainly false imprisonment, and they didn’t have any impetus to do it,” Dowlatshahi explained. “If a client has been emotionally traumatized by being detained for false imprisonment, I would definitely encourage [them] process.”
  5. “I would say, show your receipt,” he concluded. “It’s a very simple thing to do. If you haven’t stolen anything, it’s relatively simple to do,” the lawyer advised.

“I didn’t even get my first check because I was my own teller.”

There has been much debate over whether customers are legally required to show their receipts when asked.

In most cases, experts say buyers are not legally bound.

However, some stores that operate on a membership basis, like Costco, have measures like receipt checks written into their guidelines that all members must agree to when they sign up.

Experts typically recommend complying with the request to ensure staff don’t mistake you for shoplifting.
