A SHOPPER has criticized Walmart after arguing with an employee over a new self-checkout rule.

The customer admitted he was upset after a Walmart employee tried to micromanage him at self-checkout.

A Walmart shopper took to Facebook after an employee shouted, “You’re wasting our bags!”

The customer was at self-checkout, bagging their items twice so the handles wouldn’t break.

He went on to say that if she didn’t like what he was doing, she could bag them herself, which she refused.

The Walmart employee and the shopper continued to argue about the bags, but the shopper did not back down.

He claimed she finally gave up after several shoppers began watching the ordeal.

“She went back to her little podium so she could continue texting or playing on her phone or whatever she was doing before she decided to come over and criticize my bagging skills, he he said.

Other Walmart shoppers were shocked by what happened to him.

“Sad. This is our future,” one person wrote.

“You handled it better than I did. What courage,” added another person.

“Yes… I REFUSE to use these things, I will wait in line for a human,” commented a third person.

Walmart’s Controversial Cart Technology: A Mixed Bag

Last year, the store became more conservative about its use of bags.

It was announced that over 100 stores are getting rid of single-use plastic bags in 10 different states.

To enforce the new policy, Walmart started selling reusable bags near the register for about 74 cents.

“Eliminating single-use bags is part of our effort to reduce waste in our stores and help keep communities and ecosystems clean,” said Jane Ewing, senior vice president of Sustainability at Walmart.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

SELF-CHECKOUT ISSUES

Other shoppers also admitted to encountering other issues with self-checkout.

Some criticized the company after some Walmart locations restricted self-checkout so only Walmart+ members can use the kiosk.

“If I have to pay to buy a product in any store, I will never buy from that chain of stores again,” one of them wrote on Twitter. X recently.

Another person shared a similar sentiment.

“First, they made me do someone else’s job by implementing self-checkout,” they wrote.

“Now they want me to pay them to do someone else’s job. I hate Walmart.”

“If taking away people’s jobs by replacing them with computers/robots wasn’t bad enough, are they now charging already paying customers to pay for using self-checkouts?” asked another.

“They’re not on the payroll.”
