TARGET customers are fed up with recent changes in stores that they say have made it harder to check out.

A series of complaints about Target’s self-checkout continue to circulate on social media.

From frustrations with Target’s 10-items-or-fewer self-checkout policy to complaints about the store’s new anti-theft security, self-checkout hasn’t been a selling point for the big-box retailer.

Still, some customers are begging for a return to the days when they could scan items themselves.

Several shoppers recently expressed frustration with the disappearance of self-checkout kiosks from their local Target stores, forcing them to checkout at registers and causing longer wait times.

“Damn it @Target you really dropped the ball by eliminating self-checkout,” wrote one customer on X, the site formerly known as Twitter.

“My normal 5-7 minute round trip is now 20-30 minutes,” they continued. “The line now wraps around the store before reaching the register with only 3 cashiers. Make that make sense.”

They closed the publish begging the store to bring back self-checkout.

AskTarget, Target support account on X, he responded in a post, writing: “We haven’t removed them, we’ve implemented Express Self-Checkout for transactions with 10 items or less to create a faster checkout experience and so our qualified team members can support our guests with larger transactions.”

But another user he responded, contradicting the target. They said, “Most people [in line] had 10 items or less and [were] all being directed to the cashiers.”

“Self-checkout at our location here in downtown Brooklyn has been completely eliminated…” they continued.

Target he responded and said they shared user feedback with the store’s leadership team for further review.

“They will review your experience and see what appropriate changes can be made,” the retailer wrote.

Meanwhile, another user, who did not reveal his location, wrote on a publish on X that his Target store “completely destroyed self-checkout.”

CHECKOUT CLOSING TIME

Target continues to rethink its self-checkout strategies to meet the store’s needs and put an end to customer complaints.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

Last February, shoppers were furious that some locations had set limits on the opening hours of their self-service machines.

Some shoppers told Reddit that self-checkout at their stores only worked from 10am or 11am to 8pm, while others worked from 7am or 8am to 10pm.

And customers in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood say Target has removed all of its self-checkout kiosks.

Several shoppers at the location said removing the kiosk was not the answer to the high theft problems that they believe led to the elimination of self-checkout.

A Walmart in South Carolina said it is removing its self-checkout kiosks after negative customer feedback.

In other self-checkout news, a Walmart shopper found a strange $36 surcharge on her receipt at one of the kiosks.
