Maine faces a significant challenge in reducing its fossil fuel emissions, with 49% coming from the transportation sector, according to Maine.gov.

Switching to an electric vehicle (EV) is a powerful way to help reduce these emissions.

Federal and state incentives can make this transition more affordable, offering substantial savings on fuel and maintenance while providing a more enjoyable journey.

FEDERAL INCENTIVES FOR NEW EVs

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) introduces tax credits and rebates to support the transition to cleaner transportation, according to the state website.

For new electric vehicles, the IRA 30D tax credit offers up to $7,500 for eligible battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).

To qualify, new EVs must meet the following criteria:

  • List price under $80,000 for vans, SUVs and pickup trucks
  • List price under $55,000 for all other vehicles
  • A certain percentage of vehicle materials and assembly must be done in America

To take advantage of this credit, check the updated list of eligible new EVs on the website Federal Revenue website and file Form 8936 with your tax return.

STATE INCENTIVES FOR NEW EVs

In addition to federal incentives, Maine offers discounts through Maine Efficiency.

This ranges from $500 to $7,500 depending on the income of the qualifying new BEVs and PHEVs.

Customers seeking deeper discounts based on income should pre-qualify before making a purchase.

Maine also supports low-income buyers with rebates through Efficiency Maine, offering $2,500 for eligible pre-owned EVs.

FEDERAL INCENTIVES FOR USED EVs

The IRA 25E tax credit provides significant savings for used EVs, offering 30% of the cost, up to $4,000, for used BEVs or PHEVs.

To qualify, the used EV must be priced at $25,000 or less.

Be sure to check the current list of eligible used EVs and file Form 8936 with your tax return to receive the credit.

WHAT IS A REBATE?

A discount is a refund offered to customers by manufacturers, distributors or retailers at the time of a purchase.

Often called retroactive discounting, discounts serve as a powerful incentive and marketing tactic to attract customers, for example. Capital One.

These refunds can be applied to a variety of products and services, benefiting both buyers and business owners or manufacturers.

Discounts work by putting money back into the customer’s pocket. This refund can come in several forms, such as check, gift card, credit, or other type of payment.

However, to claim the discount, customers typically need to follow a specific process.

This may involve submitting a form with proof of purchase, submitting information online, or completing another set of requirements to get the discount credit.

For consumers, discounts provide an opportunity to save money on purchases.

By offering a partial refund, discounts effectively reduce the final cost of the product or service.

This can be particularly attractive for high-cost items, making them more accessible and affordable.

The process of claiming a discount may take some effort, but the financial reward may be worth it.

FEDERAL INCENTIVES FOR HOME EV CHARGER

The IRA 30C tax credit provides up to $1,000 for home electric vehicle chargers in eligible low-income or non-urban communities.

This program is still in development, so check the IRS website for updates and files Form 8911 with your tax return to claim this credit.

HOW TO QUALIFY

If you are purchasing or leasing an EV from a dealership in Maine, you will need to present a valid Maine driver’s license and sign the Maine Efficiency Buyer Agreement at the point of sale to receive an instant discount.

For enhanced discounts, pre-approval is required prior to transaction. Organizations must provide proof of good standing and, if applicable, a pre-approval letter.

For direct purchases or leases from manufacturers, customers must request a discount through the Efficiency Maine website and submit a completed discount request form within 60 days of the transaction.

Pre-approval is required for those seeking larger discounts.

Meanwhile, Americans may qualify for a direct payment of $40 per month this summer.

And some citizens could receive thousands of dollars to purchase a new form of transportation.
