WALMART shoppers are seeing the difference in prices across the country as inflation continues.
Although price increases have slowed over the past two years, this has still caused people to pay more.
One shopper shared a tip to help you evaluate how much more you’re spending today.
It involves the Walmart app, which can help you track your purchases.
The buyer shared his advice about X.
RECEIPT CHECK
The user said to check your purchase history on the Walmart app.
“Go back as far as you can and add an item you purchased to your cart,” they said.
“Notice the price difference. 20-300%, but mostly around 40% increase.”
They said they were only able to see the receipts in August 2021.
It’s unclear how far back Walmart purchase histories go, but it could vary depending on when you signed up for the app.
Comparing prices between then and now is a quick way to get a sense of inflation in the local market.
However, other changes, such as product differences or taxes, may also contribute to price differences.
Overall, though, food prices have been rising for years.
INFLATION NATION
Annual inflation has fallen to 3%, according to the latest federal figures.
This means that, on average, between June 2023 and June 2024, prices rose by 3%.
However, this represents a significant drop from the June 2022 peak annualized inflation rate of 9.1%.
In June, however, food prices were still rising.
CPI and inflation explained
The Consumer Price Index is how the federal government measures inflation.
Every month, the Bureau of Labor Statistics shares its CPI numbers with breakdowns of which items have variable prices.
The CPI shows how much prices have risen or fallen over the previous 12 months.
The calculation process is complex, but it measures price variations for urban consumers, those who live or work in an American metropolitan area.
Although it does not cover everyone, it measures prices for around 90% of the population.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics said food prices rose 0.2% for the month.
However, overall consumer goods inflation declined slightly.
Fast food and other restaurant meals have faced even higher inflation than groceries, causing some concern among shoppers.
An El Pollo Loco restaurant noticed a 70% increase in the price of meals.
Walmart previously said prices on some grocery products were falling, leading to some price reductions.
Costco is raising its rate for the first time in years.
