Stores in New Jersey, Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut and Rhode Island will close until November 2nd.

In May, the company announced upcoming store closures.

“Stop & Shop evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy foundation for the future growth of our brand,” said company president Gordon Reid, according to the Press release.

He added that the closures were “to create a healthy foundation for the future growth of our brand.”

Employees will be offered other positions within the company, according to the statement.

Stop & Shop opened in 2014 and currently has 400 stores and 60,000 employees, per Fox affiliate KRLD.

The company is owned by Ahold Delhaize, which also owns Food Lion, Giant Food and Hannaford.

WHICH STORES ARE CLOSING?

The company shared specific locations that will close in November.

It said they wanted local residents to know “well in advance” about their store closures.

In New Jersey, 10 locations will close, while only seven will close in New York.

Changes in retail: closure of large lots and more chains

Rhode Island will see two closures and Massachusetts, home to the first location, will close eight.

Five stores will close in Connecticut.

WHY ARE STORES CLOSING?

As other chains, such as Walmart and Amazon, enter the grocery business, this takes traditional supermarkets out of sight.

Stop & Shop hopes that closing underperforming stores will create “future growth” for the company.

“This means we will be focused on offering lower prices every day, as well as delivering even more savings for our customers through strong promotions.”

It has also been remodeling some stores and Reid acknowledged that they are performing better than older versions.

“Since 2018, we have completed more than 190 store remodels, thinking about the customer’s shopping experience,” he explained in the statement about the closures.

“These stores are outperforming other Stop & Shop stores that have not been renovated.

“We are taking these learnings and implementing them in other stores as we build our strong foundation.”

After closing, Stop & Shop will have 359 stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island.
