BIG Lots recently announced the closure of up to 40 stores by the end of this year.

In June, Big Lots announced that 35 to 40 of its 1,389 stores nationwide will close this year, while the company also plans to open three new stores.

The announcement, which came during the month of June archiving with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, it was no surprise to customers.

“Big Lots’ customer base was already shaken by life,” One comment about the closures said in X.

“Inflation is just the straw that broke the camel’s back,” the post continued.

Another customer blamed Big Lots’ business practices for the chain’s failure.

“At the time, Big Lots was a quality discontinued goods store,” the post began.

“Beyond any reason, they decided to become a retail store with specific brands instead of going for deals,” they continued.

“Same shit, inferior quality,” the post said.

“So there’s no reason to go regularly, no impulse purchases.”

“They get what they deserve,” the post concluded.

The reason for the closures, according to Big Lots executives, is due to the economy and inflation.

Changes in retail: closure of large lots and more chains

Big Lots claims this is causing a “macroeconomic crisis,” according to the document.

The lawsuit goes on to state that these conditions “negatively impacted our customers’ purchasing power.”

Between the first quarters of 2023 and 2024, Big Lots saw sales drop by more than 10%, according to the company’s financial documents.

This resulted in a loss of about $114.5 million.

It is currently unclear which stores will close across the country.

Big Lots currently operates in 47 states.

The chain has the largest number of locations, with 116 stores, in Texas.

Big Lots also has more than 100 stores in three other states, California with 109, Florida with 106 and Ohio with 102.

North Carolina comes next with 75 locations, New York is close behind with 64, and Georgia leads the major states with 51.
