WALMART customers are furious about the store’s payment policies – and one experience left one customer in tears.

Despite numerous calls from consumers for the retail giant to accept Apple Pay, Walmart still refuses to implement the digital payment service.

A customer recently shared that the store’s rule against Apple Pay left them on the brink of spiraling.

“About to have a meltdown at @Walmart bc they won’t let me use my stupid app I pay for just to use tap to pay for security reasons???” The buyer wrote in X.

“They won’t insert my card manually because my chip is broken. So I call for help and the operator hangs up on me.”

Another frustrated customer responded with a similar experience – and said he was so outraged he left the store.

“I left a cart full of shopping at the checkout because of this. In fact, I will never go there again”, they replied.

Apple Pay is accepted in more 85% of retailers in the US, but Walmart will not join the trend as it remains faithful to its own digital payment method, the Walmart Pay App.

The app stores customers’ debit, credit and Walmart gift card information, allowing customers to make touchless payments at checkout.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said in an interview with Strategy that the store restricts Tap to Pay options to encourage shoppers to download the Walmart app — but said the policy could change.

“Yes, maybe we [support Apply Pay] at some point,” McMillon said.

“These conversations are ongoing.

“I think in our case, we would like customers to open our app in the store all the time.”

McMillon said the app is useful for more than just payments, as customers can use it to find a store map.

“Yes, I used it and I know our stores as well as anyone, but I couldn’t find Command Hooks the other day, I used our app and it took me straight to Command Hooks, I was grateful,” the CEO said.

“You can use it to do all kinds of things, and we’ll keep adding use cases for it.”

Why doesn’t Walmart offer Apple Pay?

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon revealed why stores don’t offer Apple Pay on Stratechery with Ben Thompson.

While the retailer’s use of Apple Pay has been an ongoing conversation, McMillon emphasized that “we would like customers to open our app in store all the time.”

The app can be used to help find items in the store, but it can also be used to pay for your purchases.

“That’s one of the things we’d like people to use our app for,” he said.

He added: “But when it comes to payment specifically, that’s one of the things we’d like people to use our app for.”

The absence of Apple Pay isn’t the only thing making customers angry at the Walmart checkout counter, as customers have criticized anti-theft measures including cash receipt checks.

One shopper is “boycotting” the chain after he was not allowed to use self-checkout, which he says added 45 minutes to his supermarket trip.
