Sharon Ackerman was left apoplectic with rage after visiting a store in Dubuque, Iowa – about 175 miles from Chicago.

She went to the supermarket and filled her cart with items that cost between $40 and $50 a month. Facebook publish.

Ackerman then went to the registers, but stated that none were open.

She asked a worker about the possibility of opening one of the lanes, but was told no.

Ackerman didn’t believe the employee’s response, so he decided to abandon his shopping trip altogether.

“I left my cart and my items and left,” she said.

She also recalled a second horror experience, which caused her to think twice about shopping at the store.

Shoppers across the country have complained that their pets hate it when they are in supermarkets.

Complaints range from complaints about anti-theft strategies implemented at chains to policies related to self-checkout.

Some individual stores have implemented measures such as prohibiting customers from scanning a certain number of items.

Shoppers abandon carts due to cashier frustrations

One shopper claimed their local Walmart imposed a policy that only allows self-checkout users to scan 15 items.

Less impressed customers claimed the supermarket had become a madhouse.

Walmart even apologized to shoppers who aired their complaints on social media.

A spokesperson quickly responded to a buyer who stated 30 people were queuing up waiting for a self-checkout.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

Walmart isn’t the only chain that has come under fire from passionate customers.

Costco and Target have also been the target of such criticism.

A Costco insider was surprised when he shared photos from inside a warehouse in Edison, New Jersey, which revealed that self-checkouts had been removed.

And another was furious when they had to stand in three different queues during their shopping trip.

Last year, Target bosses tested a policy to make self-checkout lanes more efficient.

The company was trying to act on complaints flagged by customers.

Bosses limited shoppers to scanning a maximum of 10 items on the machines.

The policy was piloted in a select number of stores before being rolled out nationwide in mid-March.

But despite the company’s intentions, not all shoppers were satisfied with their in-store experiences.

This led some to boycott the network entirely.
