Fans of the beloved mall are disappointed with its closure and subsequent demolition.

Its last official day of operation will be August 31st. Tim Lowe, from the Staenberg Group – owner of Chesterfield Mall – confirmed the date for First Alert 4CBS affiliate in St. Louis

Lowe said demolition of the property will begin Oct. 15.

The mall is located near I-64, Chesterfield Parkway and Clarkson Road, about 20 miles from St. Louis.

CUSTOMER REACTION

Chesterfield Mall Fans Reacted to Drew Walters’ Facebook publish and expressed their sadness at its closure and demolition.

“Lots of good memories of this place,” wrote Mark Stagner.

Another former shopper said it was “really sad” as she thought back to her teenage memories.

“One of my first jobs was at the Macaroni Grill outside. Later, I sold cell phone accessories at a kiosk inside. It seems like yesterday and a lifetime ago all at the same time,” commented Phil Johanson.

Julia Mattie called it “The end of an era.”

While others added, they grew up frequenting the Chesterfield Mall.

Other shoppers blamed different companies for the mall’s demise, including Amazon and Shein, two online retail giants.

It will be replaced by a 117-acre, $2 billion mixed-use development that includes commercial space and apartments, according to First Alert 4.

PAST AND FUTURE

Walters gave insight into the history and demolition of Chesterfield Mall on social media.

In the Facebook post, he said the mall opened on Sept. 1, 1976, as a sister mall to the Jamestown Mall in nearby Florissant, which had recently been demolished.

Richard Jacobs developed both malls.

According to Walters, the two original anchor stores were Stix, Baer and Fuller and Sears.

In 1981, Famous-Barr was developed on the east side of the mall, before being moved to a new wing on the west side of the mall in 1995, and the former store became a JCPenney.

Stix — which became Dillard’s after 1984 — closed in 2016, Sears closed in 2018, and Famous-Barr — which became Macy’s after 2006 — closed in 2022, according to Walters.

In 2005, JC Penney was demolished and replaced with a new food court, movie theater and a group of junior anchors.

The theater closed in May 2023. The two remaining junior anchors — The Cheesecake Factory and V-Stock — will remain open for a few more weeks, Walters said.

Chesterfield Mall Closing Schedule

The Chesterfield Mall in Chesterfield, Missouri opened on September 1, 1976.

The beloved shopping mall will close its doors on August 31, 2024, after almost 50 years of operation.

The demolition date is set for October 15, 2024.

While many of the mall’s stores have already closed, according to Facebook user Drew Walters, The Cheesecake Factory and V-Stock will remain open for a few more weeks.

Other businesses remained within the Dillard’s wing, but customers must make an appointment before shopping.

The Dillard’s and Sears wings were sealed off in November 2020 and have since been closed to the public. Businesses have remained within the Dillard’s wing, but customers must make an appointment before visiting.

When demolition of the Chesterfield Mall begins on Oct. 15, it will be replaced by Downtown Chesterfield, which will have hotels, restaurants, parks, stores and office buildings available, Walters concluded.
