COSTCO shoppers are furious about the chain’s decision to raise member prices, and some are considering going shopping elsewhere.

The retailer announced earlier this month that its subscription price will increase for the first time in seven years.

The change is set to take effect on September 1st and customers are not happy.

The regular membership fee will increase from $60 to $65 per year and Executive membership will increase from $120 to $130.

One customer expressed his frustration on social media and threatened to stop shopping at Costco and take his business elsewhere.

“Here’s everything you need to know —> Cancel Costco and go to Sam’s Club,” they he wrote in X.

“I have to hit where it hurts”, they declared.

“If enough people canceled I’m sure they’d rethink their move haha,” they added.

The user wrote this in response to the news that membership prices will increase in the US and Canada.

Around 52 million members will be affected by the price rise and this has led to angry shoppers complaining on social media.

“I will definitely cancel my subscription which I haven’t been able to get value from in years,” one user he wrote.

Costco usually raises its membership prices every five years, but hasn’t done so since 2017.

“Oh shit, I need to call my dad and tell him the news, he’s going to be really mad,” said another user.

“It’s over,” said another person on X.

This isn’t the only reason customers have expressed their outrage at the chain.

CHANGE DESCRIBES ANGER

Shoppers are also upset about the member ID checks the store introduced earlier this year.

The retailer told customers that IDs must be scanned at the doors before entering the store.

This change has confused shoppers and many are unsure why the policy was introduced.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

“I still don’t understand why there is a need to show it when you enter, if everyone knows that you can’t buy without being a member,” said one customer he wrote on Facebook.

“What’s the purpose of this?” another user said.

Shoppers are retaliating against the chain and some are unwilling to renew their Costco memberships.

“I have a subscription, but I won’t renew it if it has to be checked at the door and then again at the registers,” declared one customer.
