RETAILERS across the US continue to implement anti-theft measures in stores, including locking everyday essentials behind glass display cases.

A Walmart shopper was left exasperated after receiving one of the items from her pickup order in a clear security box, leaving her with limited options on what to do next.

Gina (@ginabren) decided to take advantage of Walmart’s pickup service and ordered some items from the retail giant.

She ended up receiving her order, with one big fail.

One of the items in his order, a box of Gillette Fusion5 razor blade refills, was still locked in a clear security case.

“Hey @Walmart how the hell am I supposed to shave in this?” she postednext to a teary face and tired face emojis.

“It’s almost hammer time here (it’s from my takedown order, I didn’t steal it),” she added, before sharing a photo of her hand holding the safety box with the razor blades still inside.

Walmart’s Help X account, @walmarthelp, responded to Gina a few hours later.

“This is not good, Gina,” they wrote.

“Please DM us with more details about your purchase so we can better serve you,” they added.

Gina may have been joking when she said she was “about to be on time,” but otherwise her options were limited.

Unless she was able to open the security box herself, which could end up being a huge hassle, she would likely have to return to her local Walmart – with proof of purchase – to retrieve her purchase from the security box.

‘I got lost permanently’ screams Walmart shopper after hour-long pickup delay as store admits ‘not the service you deserve’

Suddenly, a service that was supposed to be more convenient for shoppers turned into the opposite.

And despite Walmart’s efforts, this type of problem has been happening for years.

WALL TO WALL

Many shoppers are increasingly frustrated as stores implement new anti-theft policies left and right.

One of the ways retailers hope to curb shoplifting is by locking items behind plexiglass windows.

Shoppers wanting to purchase items such as deodorant, body wash or other essentials are then forced to call a store employee to unlock the box and retrieve the item.

Some customers are fighting blocked items and completing their purchases online.

US stores locking shelves to combat theft

Retailers have begun locking shelves to combat the rise in theft.

  • Wal-Mart
  • Target
  • Walgreens
  • CVS
  • Duane Reade
  • Help Ritual
  • dollar tree
  • The home deposit
  • Sephora

Walmart now offers curbside pickup and delivery options for customers who download your app.

Jan Wilin (@bill_clyde) even shared the tip with other dissatisfied customers at X.

“It’s easier to use the collection/delivery service. That way you don’t have to deal with locked boxes,” he said. he wrote.

Both options are designed to make shopping trips more convenient for shoppers, but they don’t always work as they should.

MORE ‘MART WOES’

A Reddit user posted a similar complaint on the platform seven years ago.

“The Wal-Mart pickup left the safety box on my wife’s razor blades,” He wrotesharing a photo of a box of Gillette Venus razors in a clear box.

“If you can’t, try asking people on r/shoplifting,” one user jokingly commented.

“Hit it with a hammer so it hits the edge of the gray plastic opposite the hinge. It will simply open up,” advised another user.

“And that means you can end it with a hammer! Aren’t you a little excited about this?” another user questioned.

Anti-theft measures implemented by retailers

Retailers in the US and Canada have implemented strategies designed to combat theft. The US Sun has compiled a list of measures that have been implemented in stores.

  • Lock items in cabinets.
  • Safety stakes.
  • Security cameras.
  • Signs warning about the impact of theft.
  • Receipt scanners.
  • Receipt checks.
  • Carts with locking technology

“Alright, stop, hammer time!” another user joked.

Even a former employee stepped forward to help, sharing tips for getting the item out of the locked box.

“Coming from a former Walmart employee, on the back of the box (the one with the two notches), you should be able to put a magnet on it and slide the flap open,” they wrote.

“It’s stupidly simple,” they added.

“A hammer was my extraction choice,” one user revealed, all but putting an end to the hammer jokes.

“Overwhelming, overwhelming!” another user chimed in, not ready to give up on the hilarity of the situation at hand.

Walmart’s decision to lock up certain items — while leaving other more valuable or more expensive items exposed — has left some customers confused about why the retailer bothers locking anything up.

“Do razor blades come in safety boxes? Aren’t those for valuable things?” one user questioned.

“Security boxes and locked cabinets are for [the] most of the items stolen,” another user responded.

While it may make sense to keep “popular” items under lock and key, the same does not apply to pickup or delivery orders, where the customer pays for items in advance.

It’s unusual for a security case – a large, bulky item – to somehow get past employees, but for Walmart shoppers – in-store or otherwise – it seems to happen often.

Customers are often frustrated by having to look for an employee to unlock the displays when purchasing food and drinks.
