CHECK your change because you may be in possession of a penny that is worth much more than its face value.

If your penny has an important detail in the upper left corner, it could be worth hundreds of dollars.

Banknotes and coins with errors are often highly collectible and valuable due to their rarity.

Coin expert Eric Miller (@thecoinchannel) has over 4.7 million followers on TikTok and shares examples of this currency to watch out for.

On a video last week he explained why a penny is rare and worth significantly more than its face value.

“A new 2024 penny error was just found and sold and it is the most expensive yet,” Miller said.

“It’s important to get to something new like this early.”

Initial discovery of a coin error may lead to a higher sales price.

Early finds are often seen as more valuable because they are rare and highly sought after by collectors.

Miller noted that one of these pennies had previously sold for more than $200.

He advised his followers to look for 2,024 cents and check the top left corner of the coins for a “retained cut break” error.

Such an error occurs when a piece of the die used to strike coins cracks or breaks but remains in place, continuing to strike coins for a short period before falling out completely.

Coins minted during this period will show a raised area or anomaly where the break is located.

Miller showed an example of a retained cut die break penny that sold for $203 with 16 bids.

“If you’re watching this, you’re pretty much the only person who knows this,” he said of the new error.

PRETTY CENT

The coin expert shared another 2024 penny error that is already well known.

He advised his viewers to look at the bottom of the coin, where it says “VDB” on the obverse, just below Lincoln’s shoulder.

The letters represent Victor David Brenner, the designer of the Lincoln Cent.

Miller noted that if the three lowercase letters were missing, his 2024 penny could be worth more than $50.

He showed examples of such coins, including one that sold for $51 and another that sold for $58.

Both were recently acquired in May this year.

“Every 2024 penny you find – be sure to check these [errors]”, said the expert.

Another rare detail on a Lincoln cent makes it worth $26,000.

Additionally, a rare “Eagle Eye” penny can be worth $7,800 – check your change for “icy” details that are easy to spot.
