Despite a move and changes in ownership over the years, the Becker family managed to keep the store’s doors open in Macon, Georgia, just over 80 miles south of Atlanta, until recently.

Simon Becker, grandson of the store’s founder and its namesake, told LOCAL CBS affiliate WMAZ who has been with the company since 1984.

“I spent 40 years here,” Becker said.

“My father and my uncle before me, my grandfather before that.”

He revealed to the outlet that around nine months ago he decided he needed to close the store.

“But I don’t have anyone following me, so it would happen now or at some point in the relatively near future,” Becker said.

For 112 years, Union Furniture Company has sold sofas, coffee tables, washing machines and more.

Becker told the outlet that the store has had repeat customers for 20, 30 and even 40 years.

“We’ve had grandchildren of people we’ve done business with, we do business with,” he said.

He called the decision to close “difficult” and “very emotional.”

Becker is planning to hold a sale at the Macon store starting Wednesday, April 24th.

Everything in the store will be sold with discounts of up to 50%.

Once this is all over, Becker said the store will officially close.

He told the outlet that he and his family are grateful to the Macon community, which has been their home for decades.

“Very grateful to the community for everything they did for us and we did for them too,” he said.

“Providing furniture for generations of people in the Macon community.”

STORE CLOSURES

Union Furniture Company is reportedly the second furniture store in Macon to close in the last five years, according to WMAZ.

In 2020, Blairs Discount Furniture also closed its doors after more than four decades in the city.

Other popular furniture stores have closed across the country.

Earlier this month, The Roomplace announced it would close all of its stores in Indiana.

Locations in Wisconsin and Illinois were also expected to close in February.
