AN ANGRY Costco customer was forced to abandon his shopping cart in the checkout line due to strict membership rules.

The retailer does not allow sharing of identity documents, even with family members, which causes many shoppers to complain on social media.

“I had my mom’s Costco card and they gave me such a hard time they literally wouldn’t let me do anything,” said one buyer wrote in X.

“The lady in front of me offered to use her card, they wouldn’t let me.

“I left that cart right there in the queue,” said the user.

Costco has become increasingly strict about membership rules over the past year and customers are not happy.

There have been many reports of customers being stopped for sharing their membership card with their family or friends.

Earlier this year, the retailer announced that member IDs must be scanned upon entering the store – a move taken to try and reduce ID sharing and theft.

“If members make extra purchases for the family, they will be making more money,” said one customer in social media.

Shoppers are upset that Costco has made its membership rules stricter.

Its crackdown on card sharing sparked complaints from many members.

“We are doomed,” wrote another customer.

This is just one of the countless complaints shoppers have had about Costco in recent months.

Another member had a similar experience when she was forced to abandon a full shopping cart because her name didn’t match the one on her membership card.

“Costco has officially lost my business FOREVER!” she wrote.

“I have never been so embarrassed to have to leave with my children empty-handed.

“I was willing to pay more than 200 dollars!” she said on Facebook.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

Costco is not immune to criticism from its customers on social media.

Buyers also voiced complaints about rising subscription prices.

DISSATISFIED BUYERS

The retailer announced earlier this month that member prices will increase for the first time in seven years.

The change will be implemented from September 1st.

Regular membership fees will increase from $60 to $65 and executive membership will increase from $120 to $130.

This news generated frustration and anger among customers who were worried about paying more.

“I will definitely cancel my subscription, which I haven’t been able to get value from in years,” wrote one customer.
