A LOWE’S shopper has declared he will take his business elsewhere after discovering his local store only offers self-checkout.

The customer took to social media to express their frustration with this change.

“I just found out my @Lowes has switched to self-checkout only,” the woman he wrote in X.

“To say I’m disappointed is an understatement.

“Unless I find a local hardware store, it looks like I’ll be spending more time at @AceHardward or @HomeDepot.”

Shoppers across the US have been voicing their complaints about self-checkout for some time.

They fear this change will create a number of problems, including longer checkout times.

Other shoppers voiced similar complaints about changes Lowe’s has implemented at some of its stores.

“I grabbed a bunch of tools and went to checkout. There were only self-checkout machines open,” another angry customer he wrote.

“I asked an employee where I could pay without using self-checkout. They told me that wasn’t possible.

“You lost my business.”

There seems to be a consensus on social media that customers don’t want self-service-only cash registers when they shop at Lowe’s stores.

‘What sense does that make,’ ask Walmart shoppers as store rolls out self-checkout limit – but only has two open tills

“@Lowes, your decision to do away with cashiers and use self-checkout is disastrous!” a buyer he wrote.

“Waiting time to checkout has increased dramatically and now people with large loads (like wood) get stuck the opening kiosks, so you have to wait!”

This buyer also stated that he would take his business elsewhere.

The US Sun has reached out to Lowe’s for comment on this matter.

Another customer announced on Facebook that they would boycott the retailer because of self-checkout-only cashiers.

“I feel like this store and any others that insist on self-checkout don’t appreciate our business enough to actually greet us and take our money,” they wrote.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers also identified their local Walmart stores restricting customers to 15 items or less to use self-checkout machines.

“I regret that we will no longer shop at this or any other Lowe’s store,” she said.

“You lost a sale,” wrote another frustrated shopper on X.

And Lowe’s isn’t the only chain that’s made this change.

Shoppers at Walmart and Target protested the item limit policy introduced by some stores in the US.

Walmart’s 15 items or less rule was introduced in some stores this year and customers are not happy.

“What sense does it make to change self-checkout lanes to 15 items or less BUT only have 2-3 registers open?!” one customer wrote.

Similarly, Target’s announcement of its limit of 10 items or less earlier this year also frustrated customers.

“I will never buy more than 10 items there again,” said one shopper.
