The 1821 cent coin features the head of Lady Liberty and 13 six-pointed stars.

The reverse features a wreath and the words “United States of America”.

However, it is the unique “marriage” of the two sides of the coin that adds value.

The coin sold for five figures on June 13 to an anonymous internet bidder, according to Heritage Auctions.

IN DETAILS

The auction listing highlighted the coin’s brown color and low mintage.

“Although designated as brown, faded orange-red adorns much of the reverse, along with shades of olive brown and mahogany,” it said.

He said that relatively few pennies were made in 1821, increasing the value of this specimen.
