RARE coins can be an opportunity to win thousands of dollars – if you know what to look for.
A rare penny recently sold for $20,400, but it doesn’t look like a typical penny.
The 1821 cent coin features the head of Lady Liberty and 13 six-pointed stars.
The reverse features a wreath and the words “United States of America”.
However, it is the unique “marriage” of the two sides of the coin that adds value.
The coin sold for five figures on June 13 to an anonymous internet bidder, according to Heritage Auctions.
IN DETAILS
The auction listing highlighted the coin’s brown color and low mintage.
“Although designated as brown, faded orange-red adorns much of the reverse, along with shades of olive brown and mahogany,” it said.
He said that relatively few pennies were made in 1821, increasing the value of this specimen.
Marriages occur when drawings of two coins go to the same coin.
This means that the design of the ‘head’ side was done separately from the ‘crown’ side.
This rarity can also add value to collectors.
However, one of the biggest factors in a coin’s value is its grade.
This penny was graded by Professional Coin Grading Service, who rated it 63 out of 70.
This means it is among the highest quality examples of this cent.
