There is NO better feeling than arriving at the cash register and realizing that some of your items are arriving at an additional discount.

However, one Dollar General customer was devastated to realize that a cashier’s actions caused him to pay more than he would have if he never received – or accepted – the extra savings.

Christopher Furnace, aka @Christopher_585, shared his unique X shopping situation, warning potential customers to double-check the prices of individual items in their purchases.

“Uh, not the Dollar General cashier discounting two of my items more than they should have,” Christopher postedleaving some social media users confused.

Scanning an item at checkout and making it appear less than expected should not be a cause for concern.

Most shoppers tend to be ecstatic at the thought of saving a few extra dollars, especially as prices for everyday essentials and groceries skyrocket in stores across the country.

“Obviously I wouldn’t normally complain about that,” he explained.

“My total came to $38 instead of $40, so my $10 off $40 didn’t apply,” he added, alongside a tired face emoji.

Christopher initially believed he was getting an additional deal on his purchases, saving $2 on his previous $40 transaction.

However, the $2 discount ended up costing him more money than he would have paid initially.

Because his purchase didn’t meet the $40 minimum required to use his $10 off coupon, Christopher ended up spending $8 more than he would have if he hadn’t received the unexpected savings.

If he had spent $40 as planned, his $10 coupon would have made his transaction cost $30, plus any taxes and fees.

However, when he unexpectedly saved $2 between some items in his cart, he ended up falling short of the minimum.

Despite Christopher’s pleas, Dollar General did not honor his coupon, leaving him to spend $8 more than he had originally planned.

Dollar General has been criticized in the past for allegedly overcharging its customers.

Stores selling at least $1,000 will close, says CEO

Dollar Tree, the parent company of Family Dollar, revealed that it would close about 1,000 stores over the next few years.

The company announced in March that it would close stores after the value of the discount retailer it acquired nearly a decade ago plummeted.

Dollar Tree plans to close about 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of this year.

This will be followed by the closure of 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores in the coming years.

The discount store chain also indicated that sales are being affected by the cost of living crisis and inflation.

But USA today added that Dollar Tree has also been hit by reduced government benefits for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

This has left families struggling to balance their finances, with up to $250 less per month.

The retailer has faced customer complaints about customer purchases being rounded up to a higher dollar amount.

They also faced a lot of criticism for not offering change to customers in select stores.

Despite continued criticism and despite facing a series of store closures across the U.S., Dollar General continues to move forward.

The discount chain plans to open new locations in the coming months and has even announced plans to renovate more than 1,600 existing storefronts.

DOLLARS FROM THE DOLLAR TREE

Savvy shoppers applauded rival discount chain Dollar General for its wide selection of dupe products.

From seasonal decor items to bathroom essentials and beauty products, Dollar Tree seems to have an affordable price point for just about any product sold at high-end retailers.

Shoppers can purchase anything from Halloween decor to candy and other essentials at a fraction of the cost compared to other stores.

The budget retailer went viral on social media for offering dupe products from Anthropologie, Pottery Barn, Ulta and Michaels, among other brands.

THAT’S A LOT OF DOLLARS

Last month, Dollar General was forced to hand over $12 million to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, also known as OSHA.

OSHA says Dollar General has violated hundreds of safety standards in recent years, from blocked exits to misplaced fire extinguishers.

In July 2024, a spokesperson for the retailer told The US Sun that the store and its employees “remain committed to ensuring a safe work environment for our employees and a pleasant shopping experience for our customers.”

Since 2017, OSHA has found 111 cases of discount stores violating basic workplace safety measures, racking up more than $21 million in workplace safety fines and fees.
