A COSTCO buyer criticized the retailer for rejecting her over a controversial membership policy.

The customer was outraged by the store’s policy and vowed never to return.

“@Costco there is a very smelly receptionist in Elkridge, MD [Maryland] place that stopped me from patronizing their store because I was using my father’s card,” the buyer he wrote in a post on X.

“I will never be her client again while she is still working at this location.”

Costco has cracked down on membership sharing this year and customers are not happy.

Members are not allowed to share their identities with anyone – not even their family members.

The retailer has been implementing this policy more strictly in recent times and furious shoppers have taken to social media to express their outrage.

“Why is Costco having police state-like behavior?” asked one customer.

“Wrong approach @Costco,” declared another shopper.

It appears hundreds of shoppers have been caught out by Costco’s membership policy.

One woman explained that she had been using her husband’s card for over a decade without any problems.

But last month everything changed when an employee refused to serve her.

“My husband opened his Costco membership over 11 years ago and I have been using the same card ever since,” she said.

“Today I was stopped because my photo wasn’t on his card, they took my purchases to force me to open a subscription.”

Customers labeled him “ridiculous” and “over the top.”

The policy has led some Costco shoppers to abandon their membership and take their business elsewhere.

“Honestly, Costco is not worth it anymore,” said another shopper.

The US Sun has reached out to Costco for comment.

And this isn’t the only reason people choose to shop elsewhere.

Costco Membership Sharing Guidelines

Costco has strict rules for subscription usage that shoppers must follow and has been cracking down on violators in recent years.

  • Core Member Usage: Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. It is not allowed to share it for purchases, as the photo on the card must correspond to the person using it.
  • Domestic Card: Each Prime Member can add one free Household Cardholder who lives at the same address. That person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
  • Guest Policy: Members can bring up to two guests per Costco visit. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by a member.
  • Authorized cardholder: For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who does not reside at your address. They will receive their own card and will be able to make purchases independently.

Rising costs of Costco products, as well as rising membership fees, have forced some shoppers to look elsewhere.

Last month, the retailer announced it would increase membership fees starting in September 2024.

Regular membership will increase from $60 to $65 per year and those who are executive members will see their dues increase from $10 to $130 annually.

“Of course the food prices at Costco are out of control,” said one customer.

“My subscription will be canceled when the renewal comes,” they declared.
