DO NOT replace your iPhone yet: there may be a cheaper way to “upgrade” it.
An iPhone owner is excited about a smart way to quickly and cheaply improve the life and performance of their device’s battery.
It’s buying a replacement battery from Apple, which can greatly extend the life of your device.
In a Reddit thread, one user wrote: “I just got a new life for my iPhone 11 Pro.
“It’s crazy that I basically got a new phone that will last another 3-4 years just because I changed the battery.”
They continued: “I finally succumbed to a battery change at an Apple Store, and it’s brand new. That’s it, the phone is as if it just came out of the box (as long as I take very good care of it).
“I haven’t experienced this with any other technology I own.
“Despite all its shortcomings, Apple’s dedication to long-term software updates and build quality will forever impress me.”
APPLE JUICE
As you charge and discharge an iPhone, its battery degrades.
This is the case for all rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, so Samsung and Google phones will experience this too – as will their tablets and laptops.
Apple explains: “All rechargeable batteries are consumables and have a limited life.
“Eventually, their capacity and performance decline so much that they need to be replaced.”
With good habits and the correct settings, you can reduce the rate at which your battery degrades.
But there is no other way to prevent this other than avoiding using your iPhone altogether.
As the battery degrades, your iPhone will also eventually throttle performance to protect the battery – and prevent random shutdowns.
So if you’ve had an iPhone for four or five years, you may find that it holds a much less charge compared to when it was new and runs slower.
HOT CHANGE
That’s why instead of upgrading to a new model, you can opt for a battery replacement.
This will instantly restore your iPhone to 100% maximum battery capacity – just like a brand new model.
Why do batteries get worse over time?
Here’s what you need to know…
- Most gadgets run on lithium-ion batteries
- Over time, the amount of charge this type of battery can hold decreases.
- This means you need to charge your device more often because they hold less charge
- Batteries have two electrode points – the cathode and the anode
- To charge a battery, ions inside the battery are forced from the cathode to the anode
- When you use a battery, it moves in the reverse direction
- This process wears down the anode structure, reducing its ability to function properly.
- But the process also accumulates a type of salt on the cathode during charging.
- As this buildup increases, the battery will accept less charge over time
- It is estimated that between 500 and 1,000 full charge cycles will reduce the battery’s maximum capacity by about 20%.
And you’ll probably find that it works a lot better, too.
You can check your iPhone’s maximum charging capacity in Settings > Battery.
The cost of an Apple battery replacement varies depending on your iPhone model.
For example, a iPhone 15 A Pro Max battery replacement will cost $99 – although you probably won’t need one given how new the device is.
An iPhone 11 replacement costs $89, while an iPhone 8 replacement costs $69.
Whatever the cost of replacing the battery, it will probably be cheaper than buying a new iPhone.
