If your Samsung Galaxy phone just can’t make it through the day, it might be time to take a look at the settings.

This may be the case if you’ve had your phone for a while: Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, like the ones inside smartphones, degrade naturally.

This means they will hold less charge compared to when they were new, which means you may need to make some changes to increase your phone’s battery life.

“Galaxy phones are designed to deliver high performance and excellent battery life,” explained Samsung.

“However, battery life depends on how it is used and different devices have different battery life.

“Long screen timeout settings or high screen brightness can substantially reduce battery life.

“To save battery, consider lowering the brightness setting, turning off auto-brightness, reducing the to sleep setting timeout and adjusting screen resolution and wallpaper.”

SAMSUNG DISPLAY SETTINGS TO IMPROVE BATTERY

An easy adjustment to make is to reduce the screen resolution.

By choosing a lower resolution, you can instantly save battery.

Battery tip: the ‘100% myth’ that’s killing your battery

Just go to Settings > Display > Change screen resolution, choose one of the leftmost options and click Apply.

You should also try to reduce the screen timeout delay.

This determines how long the screen remains active after the last tap on it.

It’s set to 30 seconds by default, but you can reduce it to 15 seconds in Settings > Display > Screen Timeout.

Reducing screen brightness is a very simple way to improve battery life.

You can do this in Settings > Display or more quickly by swiping down from the top of the screen and using the quick panel slider.

And unless you’re in a very bright place, you may need to go to Settings > Display and turn off Adaptive Brightness to prevent this from being overridden.

If your Samsung phone has an AMOLED display (and many recent models do), then Dark Mode can also improve battery life.

Samsung – a brief history

Here’s what you need to know…

  • Samsung is a large South Korean company made up of many companies operating globally
  • It is known locally as “chaebol”, which means “business conglomerate”
  • It was founded by Lee Byung-chul in 1938 as a trading company
  • But over several decades, it branched out into food processing, insurance, textiles and retail.
  • It was only in the late 1960s that Samsung entered the electronics industry – for which it is now best known in the West.
  • It also launched construction and shipbuilding businesses in the 1970s
  • Today, Samsung’s most important sources of income are its smartphones and computer chips
  • The company is responsible for about a fifth of South Korea’s total exports and about 17% of the country’s GDP.
  • More than 270,000 employees are employed by Samsung worldwide
  • And in 2023, Samsung Electronics earned the equivalent of US$194 billion in revenue

Just go to Settings > Display to turn it on system-wide.

Try one or more of these changes to see if your battery life improves without completely ruining your smartphone experience.
