There are JUST weeks left for some iPhone owners to claim more than $349 in a settlement over audio problems on an older model iPhone.

The large payments are part of a massive $35 million settlement that stems from a class-action lawsuit that accuses Apple of violating consumer protection and breach of warranty laws.

Only certain iPhone owners will qualify for the payments, and it all depends on the model of iPhone people have owned during a given period.

WHAT IS THE AGREEMENT ABOUT?

In May 2023, Apple awake to the $35 million settlement after a federal court failed to rule in favor of the technology company or plaintiffs who accused Apple of wrongdoing.

At the time, collective action claimed Apple sold iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus devices with defective chips.

They argued that the chips created audio problems for customers.

Apple denied any wrongdoing.

AM I ELIGIBLE?

To receive the big direct check, individuals must fit two main descriptions of people affected by the alleged audio issues.

Specifically, participants must be US residents and own an Apple iPhone 7 or 7 Plus between September 16, 2016 and January 3, 2023.

They should also have reported to Apple any issues related to the sound speaker, sound microphone, sound receiver, unexpected restart/shutdown, or power on – unresponsive device.

These issues were considered “covered issues” by Apple.

Individuals considered Apple directors, officers, employees, legal representatives of the company, as well as successors and assigns are excluded from the agreement.

All bailiffs assigned to the case, their employees and immediate family members are also unable to claim compensation.

Most eligible participants should have received a postcard or letter notifying them of their ability to claim the money.

To claim funds, eligible participants must provide their payment information to the Settlement Administrator by June 3, 2024.

Within this, applicants can choose how they want to receive the money, such as via electronic check, ACH transfer, or physical check.

This information may be provided by mail or online.

iPhone Tricks to Try Today

Here are some of the best…

  • Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the spacebar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, allowing you to move words and sentences more easily
  • Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapping squares in the bottom right corner and press close all tabs
  • Delete many photos quickly – Long press a photo and drag your finger diagonally across Photos to select multiple images at once and click delete
  • Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of the home screen, tap the bar and enter a currency (like €200) and it will automatically convert to your local currency
  • Check if you need a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and check the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally, a battery is considered exhausted when its capacity is reduced to 80%. If it’s below, you can buy a battery change from Apple
  • Move apps faster – Hold an app until it starts to jiggle, then (while holding) tap other apps, making them stack so you can move them more easily

HOW MUCH WILL I RECEIVE?

All eligible settlement members who provide their payment information should receive a direct payment later this year.

Payments will vary depending on whether the individuals themselves paid Apple for the repairs or replacements or whether they complained to the company but did not pay.

The settlement guidelines reveal that those who paid Apple out of pocket for any covered repairs or replacements – and did not “timely cancel and submit payment information to the Settlement Administrator” will receive a payment of between $50 and $349.

For those who simply reported the issues but didn’t pay, Apple will receive a payment of up to $125.

Payments will be distributed following a final settlement approval hearing on July 18, 2024.
