Earlier this year, the company decided to start showing ads on Prime Video content.

If users want to watch movies and TV shows without ads, they will now have to pay an extra $2.99 per month.

Now, the cost of Prime Video amounts to almost $36 more per year.

A typical Amazon Prime subscription only costs about $14.99 per month.

The controversial change left many Amazon fans furious.

Several took to Reddit to express their frustrations, calling the company “out of control” with the increase in ads.

“Last night I was forced to watch 9 ads in a row. Over and over again,” a viewer posted in a Reddit thread dedicated to Amazon Prime.

“My boyfriend and I discovered that if you pause a program, an ad will appear and bounce across the screen. Then when I resumed it played 3-4 ads. I took a break right after them to talk to my boyfriend and when I resumed, I got 3-4 more ads!!

“Every time you rewind, pause or fast forward, 3-4 more ads. They want you to pay more for the luxury of no ads, but that seems like cheap behavior to me.

The Amazon insider wrote that he hoped the company would “slow down” with the amount of ads shown.

“It’s just out of control.”

Several others agreed, saying the cost of membership isn’t worth the hassle.

“I hardly buy from Amazon, but I use prime video. If there are ads, why do I need an account?” an Amazon member he said.

“I also feel the same way about Netflix. But that doesn’t make sense to me, it just feels like double dipping. Am I crazy thinking about this?

OTHER CHANGES

In addition to introducing more ads, Amazon also recently removed other features from the basic Prime Video subscription that are now only accessible with the ad-free subscription.

Specifically, viewers can no longer enjoy Dolby Vision HDR with the basic subscription or Dolby Atmos surround sound at no extra cost.

Amazon defended the changes, with vice president Jay Marine saying it intends to invest more money in content for members.

“We start with the customer and work backwards,” Marine said.

“And by making this change, we will be able to continue to invest in more great content – like hit movies and TV shows and more live sports – and that investment will continue to grow over time to deliver an even better service to Prime members . .”
