In an official memo on how to improve phone performance, Samsung revealed some tricks to preserve battery life.

And an easy trick to miss is the App Power Management setup.

It’s hidden in your settings, so you might not have seen it.

The feature works by minimizing battery usage. applications – including an option to place some in a “deep to sleep“.

APP POWER MANAGEMENT

To find the feature, go to Settings > Device Care > Battery and tap App Power Management.

You will be presented with a list of options that can help improve battery life.

Here’s the full list of settings, according to Samsung:

  • Adaptive Battery: If enabled, battery usage will be limited for apps you don’t use often.
  • Put unused apps to sleep: If enabled, apps will be put to sleep when they haven’t been used for a while.
  • Sleep apps: These apps will not run in the background. They may not receive updates or send notifications.
  • Apps to sleep soundly: These apps will never run in the background. They will only work when you open them.
  • Applications that will not be put to sleep: These apps will not be put to sleep.
Battery tip: the ‘100% myth’ that’s killing your battery

Some of them require selecting specific applications.

For example, the Deep Sleeping section lets you choose apps to completely prevent them from running in the background.

This means you won’t get any prior benefit from them, so keep that in mind.

You can check which apps are draining your battery in the background by going to Settings > Device Care > Battery > Battery Usage.

Why do batteries get worse over time?

Here’s what you need to know…

  • Most gadgets run on lithium-ion batteries
  • Over time, the amount of charge this type of battery can hold decreases.
  • This means you need to charge your device more often because they hold less charge
  • Batteries have two electrode points – the cathode and the anode
  • To charge a battery, ions inside the battery are forced from the cathode to the anode
  • When you use a battery, it moves in the reverse direction
  • This process wears down the anode structure, reducing its ability to function properly.
  • But the process also accumulates a type of salt on the cathode during charging.
  • As this buildup increases, the battery will accept less charge over time
  • It is estimated that between 500 and 1,000 full charge cycles will reduce the battery’s maximum capacity by about 20%.

POWER MODES

There is also another setting you should check called Power Mode.

This lets you quickly extend battery life by changing how your phone prioritizes performance.

You can find the list of options in Settings > Device Care > Battery > Power Mode.

The first is called High performance and will use more battery than any other mode.

It works by offering increased system speed, maximum screen brightness options, and maximum screen resolution.

The second on the list is Optimizedwhich offers a balanced performance profile that is easier on the battery than High Performance.

The third is Average energy savingsa mode that aims to extend battery life by limiting some functions.

And finally there is Maximum energy savings which works to preserve as much charge as possible – with an impact on performance and functionality as a result.
