SAMSUNG is encouraging users to ignore a common myth about charging – and says it can ruin your phone’s battery.

In a special memo to users on how to improve battery life, Samsung explains how there is one mistake you should avoid making.

It is often said that you should regularly let your smartphone’s battery drain completely.

But this is no longer the case and can do more harm than good.

“Avoid completely discharging the battery,” Samsung recommended to users.

The company explained: “On much older battery types, the advice used to be to discharge them completely.

“This is not the case with modern smartphone batteries. Completely discharging your device’s battery can reduce its lifespan.”

Samsung added: “It’s best not to let the battery drop below 20%.”

Additionally, if you are going to store your Samsung phone for a long period of time – such as in a box or drawer – you will need to do another battery check.

“If you don’t intend to use your device for some time and store it, make sure it has at least 50% battery,” explains Samsung.

If the cell charge becomes too low during storage, it could irreparably damage the battery.

BATTERY INCREASE!

If you’re struggling to keep your Samsung phone above 20% per day, there are some battery life tips that can help.

For example, you can go to battery settings to activate power saving mode.

Samsung explains: “Power saving mode differs slightly between devices, but generally closes all unnecessary apps and screens so you can substantially increase your battery time.”

The tech giant also recommends turning off mobile data if you’re in an area with poor reception.

This is because your smartphone consumes more power if it receives poor cellular signal for an extended period of time.

Samsung says it can use “a lot of power” in this situation, so it’s best to turn off mobile data in weak signal areas unless absolutely necessary.

The phone manufacturer notes that you should be aware of apps that use power in the background.

A common myth is that batteries last longer if they are placed in the freezer. This is not correct and could damage your battery.

You can check a list of apps that are consuming your battery in your phone’s settings.

“Some applications consume a lot of power, especially if they use characteristics like GPS,” Samsung explained.

“Be sure to close applications when not in use.”

And most importantly, try to keep your Samsung phone at normal temperatures.

Why do batteries get worse over time?

Here’s what you need to know…

  • Most gadgets run on lithium-ion batteries
  • Over time, the amount of charge this type of battery can hold decreases.
  • This means you need to charge your device more often because they hold less charge
  • Batteries have two electrode points – the cathode and the anode
  • To charge a battery, ions inside the battery are forced from the cathode to the anode
  • When you use a battery, it moves in the reverse direction
  • This process wears down the anode structure, reducing its ability to function properly.
  • But the process also accumulates a type of salt on the cathode during charging.
  • As this buildup increases, the battery will accept less charge over time
  • It is estimated that between 500 and 1,000 full charge cycles will reduce the battery’s maximum capacity by about 20%.

If your phone gets too hot or cold, it can not only affect battery life but also permanently damage the cell.

Samsung notes: “Extreme heat and cold can damage the battery. For example, don’t leave your smartphone in the glove compartment of your car on very hot or cold days.

“A common myth is that batteries last longer if they are placed in the freezer. This is not correct and could damage the battery.”
