GOOGLE revealed some of the biggest causes of Android battery drain.

If you are constantly plagued by low charge, there are four checks you need to do now.

Battery life depends on many things, such as the physical size of the battery and the demands on your device – and also how you use it.

And some activities tax the battery more than others.

GOOGLE’S BATTERY KILLERS

The first is to run multiple applications at the same time.

“Apps consume battery when in use,” Google explained in a special memo to Android Users.

“Running multiple apps at the same time or having too many apps running in the background can increase battery consumption.”

The second is to set the screen brightness to maximum.

It’s much better to adjust it to the brightness of your surroundings rather than leaving it at maximum brightness all the time.

Otherwise, you’ll see your battery life plummet.

Third, make sure your device doesn’t get hot – and this is serious.

Battery tip: the ‘100% myth’ that’s killing your battery

“High temperatures can sometimes lead to faster battery drain,” Google said.

“Possible causes include using it in hot environments and performing processor-intensive jobs.

“Running multiple apps simultaneously or using demanding apps can heat up your device.”

It is especially important because very high temperatures can damage the battery cell, leading to a permanent reduction in battery capacity.

Why do batteries get worse over time?

Here’s what you need to know…

  • Most gadgets run on lithium-ion batteries
  • Over time, the amount of charge this type of battery can hold decreases.
  • This means you need to charge your device more often because they hold less charge
  • Batteries have two electrode points – the cathode and the anode
  • To charge a battery, ions inside the battery are forced from the cathode to the anode
  • When you use a battery, it moves in the reverse direction
  • This process wears down the anode structure, reducing its ability to function properly.
  • But the process also accumulates a type of salt on the cathode during charging.
  • As this buildup increases, the battery will accept less charge over time
  • It is estimated that between 500 and 1,000 full charge cycles will reduce the battery’s maximum capacity by about 20%.

The fourth item on the list is not to use the included power adapter.

This isn’t necessarily a big risk, but there is potential for battery issues.

Google explained: “Using a non-genuine power adapter may lead to improper voltage regulation and heat up the device.

“If you are using a third-party adapter, make sure it is compatible with your device’s specifications.”

Using the Battery Saver function is a great way to get more power out of a single charge.

HOW TO SAVE ANDROID BATTERY LIFE

In addition to fixing the above issues, there is another trick recommended by Google.

Android phones typically offer a battery saving mode.

And some even have a more powerful Extreme Battery Saver setting.

Google Pixel battery tips – the official guide

Here’s Google’s official advice for Pixel owners on how to boost battery power…

Tip 1: Let your phone close apps you’re not using.

Tip 2: Keep your phone and apps updated. Apps become more battery efficient with each new iteration, resolving bugs and crashes that consume unnecessary power.

Tip 3: Lower the brightness. Save your eyes by lowering your phone’s brightness and saving battery. You can also set your phone to the Dark theme, which turns the background black. It consumes less energy and also relieves some eye strain.

Tip 4: Know which apps and activities consume a lot of energy. Pixel users should be aware of which activities drain their batteries the most. Video calls and games are at the top of the list. Users should also shut down apps they have open but are not using.

Here’s Google’s extensive list of what changes when you enable these settings:

  • Only update app content (email, news, etc.) when opened
  • Stop location services when the screen is off
  • Prevent apps from running in the background unless Battery Optimization is turned off
  • Not responding to “OK Google” hands-free commands
  • Activate the dark theme
  • Delay notifications
  • Turn off always-on display
  • Disable Active Edge squeeze activation on Pixel phones
  • Turn off car crash detection on Pixel 3, 4 and later
  • Turn off Motion Sense on Pixel 4
  • Turn off Smooth Display on Pixel 4 and later
  • Switch Pixel 5G Phones to 4G
  • Limit Internet Connectivity and Location Access – Minimizing mobile data, WiFi, Bluetooth, and location services when they are not needed can help save battery life. Turn on Airplane mode when mobile data is not needed. Also avoid battery-consuming apps, such as cameras and games. Don’t keep too many apps running in the background.
  • Use dark color themes – Using dark mode/theme on your device and apps can reduce battery consumption if available. Useful to avoid intense light stimuli at night and sleep concerns. To activate:
  • Open the Settings app
  • Tap View
  • Enable or disable dark theme

To turn it on, just go to Settings > Battery and activate Battery Saver.

You can also schedule Battery Saver to activate automatically when you reach specific battery levels.

Likewise, you can set it to turn off when it returns to 90% charge.
