Samsung Galaxy phones once regularly shipped with a “notification LED”.

This would flash when you received a notification and could also alert you to other phone events.

It sat on the devices’ front panel at the top and used a range of colors and flashes to signal different alerts.

But Samsung abandoned the feature with the launch of the Galaxy S10 in 2019.

Now, newer devices no longer include the feature.

Disappointed Samsung fans recently took to Reddit to share their desire to have it back.

One post with more than 100 upvotes says: “I miss the old LED notification light.

He continued: “I loved having this. Upgrading from S9 to S24 meant the loss wasn’t easy for me. I’m still grieving.”

They added: “It’s not the same without him!”

Another wrote: “Yes, every few years I try these software applications to replicate it, but it’s not the same.

“The charging light was Cool also when it would turn green.”

But others said they weren’t too sad the missing resource.

One wrote: “Yeah, but I don’t miss that big ol’ forehead. The LED was fine, but the Always-On Display replaced it with better functionality.”

Gone but not forgotten…

Here’s a list of some features that have largely disappeared from modern Samsung phones…

  • Headphone jacks
  • SD card slots
  • Notification LEDs
  • Removable batteries
  • Infrared Blasters

Another said: “Maybe at first, but pretty much everything else was so much better that I adapted quickly.”

Each LED color had its own meaning.

Here was Samsung’s official list:

  • Blue (pulsating): The device is turning on or off.
Blue (flashing): there is an unread notification (missed call, message, etc.) or during voice recording.
  • Red (bright): connected to a charger and charging.
Red (flashing): connected to a charger but not charging, or when the battery is low.
  • Bright Green): connected to a charger and fully charged.
    Green (flashing): Fully charged.
  • Other colours: If you have installed third-party apps that include LED notifications, your phone may flash different colors (such as white, purple, or pink).
