NETFLIX is pulling out of second and third generation Apple TVs.
The streaming giant’s subscribers took to Reddit to express their thoughts on the change.
As On the edge reported, Netflix is removing its services from second and third generation Apple TVs.
According to the publication, the streaming company wrote in an email to customers that the change aims to “maintain the best Netflix experience possible”.
Per Apple InsiderNetflix also announced that the change will take effect on July 31, 2024.
As the outlet noted, other than age, it’s unclear why Netflix is ditching older Apple TVs, although codec support could be an issue.
Netflix also added the ad to its Help Center in the Features section of Netflix.
“Netflix will no longer be available on Apple TV (2nd generation) and Apple TV (3rd generation) after July 31, 2024,” the company wrote.
Apple Insider noted that as of now, Home Sharing, AirPlay, and Apple apps still work on its older TVs.
OUT WITH THE OLD
According to Apple Insider, the second generation Apple TV was released in September 2010, followed by the third generation in 2012.
Both devices used “a fork” of iOS.
Older products “were effectively obsolete” when Apple launched the fourth-generation Apple TV in September 2015, according to the outlet.
The fourth generation includes tvOS and an App Store.
Apple TV 4K was released on November 4, 2022 and “is effectively the seventh generation of Apple TV hardware, not counting an incredibly minor hardware revision in the third generation.”
The newest model is “the third 4K capable unit.”
The first-generation Apple TV, which “ran a variant of OS X,” is “long gone.”
According to Apple Supportits products “are considered obsolete” when the company “stopped distributing them for sale more than 7 years ago”.
“Apple is discontinuing all hardware services for obsolete products, and service providers cannot order parts for obsolete products,” it continues.
REDDIT REACTION
Netflix and Apple TV customers took to Reddit to share their thoughts on the change to a topic titled “Netflix is finally dropping support for 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TVs.”
“This is a shame considering you still can’t jailbreak and plex them,” one user wrote.
“Damn*, it’s time to finally retire my high school graduation present,” commented another.
“Oh I know a lot of people who still have this as their main way of watching Netflix, they will be upset,” said a third, in part.
“I know most people here will say ‘they’ve been supported for a long time, they’re too old’. I get it, it still sucks to create more electronic waste (and expenses) just because you have to buy a new device that will be used exactly the same as the old one, compared to a 20 year old blu. ray player that still works well with new movies.”
“Wait what? Are you kidding me?” a fourth user wrote.
