A HUGE artificial intelligence upgrade is coming to millions of Apple devices – but can yours do it?

But it requires powerful on-device processing that many of Apple’s older gadgets simply can’t handle.

Apple Intelligence was revealed as part of the company’s WWDC 2024 event on Monday, along with general software updates like iOS 18 for iPhone, iPadOS 18 for iPad, and macOS Sequoia for Mac.

O AI The update brings big improvements to the way Siri feels natural and effective to use, a built-in option to request information from ChatGPT, and fun bonus features like generating custom emojis or searching for specific moments in videos you’ve recorded.

WHY IS NOT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDING?

The problem is that Apple Intelligence is very powerful – and extremely demanding.

Some of your queries will be handled by Apple servers securely through the Private Cloud Compute system.

But much of what’s happening in terms of processing the resources you’re using will occur on your device – putting a lot of pressure on the chips.

This means that not all Apple devices will receive the Apple Intelligence update.

“The core models require an enormous amount of computing,” said Apple’s John Giannandrea in a discussion featuring The Sun.

“It is the amount of computation required that provides this limitation.”

The update will arrive in beta in the fall as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia.

There is no exact information about the launch of iOS 18, but the official prediction from The Sun is Monday, September 16th.

Here are the devices that will support Apple Intelligence:

  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPad (with M1 chip or later)
  • Mac (with M1 chip or later)

TIM COOK’S OFFICIAL WORD

Here’s what Apple CEO Tim Cook said about Apple Intelligence…

“We’re excited to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation,” explained Tim.

“Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products – and what our products can do for our users.

“Our unique approach combines generative AI with the user’s personal context to deliver truly actionable intelligence.

“And you can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do what matters most to them.

“This is AI, only Apple can deliver it, and we can’t wait for users to experience what it can do.”

You’ll also need to make sure your Siri and device languages are set to US English.

It’s also safe to assume that at least some of Apple’s products next round of iPhone models will support Apple Intelligence.

But it’s unclear whether it will be restricted to iPhone 16 Pro models (if they are planned) or whether regular iPhone 16 devices will also get it.

We won’t know about the next iPhone models until Apple’s usual September event.

The Sun previously predicted this would happen on Tuesday, September 10th, with the iPhone’s launch date on Friday, September 20th.

However, Apple hasn’t confirmed any of this – so don’t mark your calendars just yet.
