An iPhone owner was confused when he saw a mysterious icon at the top of the screen.

The symbol has some very useful benefits – and even includes a clever Apple Easter egg.

In a Reddit post, an Apple fan asked: “What does this symbol mean?

“This particular status symbol has been there since morning. I don’t know what it represents. Could anyone help me understand?”

They shared an image of a small badge symbol next to the clock in the status bar at the top of this iPhone screen.

And it turns out that this is the icon for the Work option for Apple’s Focus modes.

WHAT IS FOCUS AT WORK?

Focus modes are special alternatives to Do Not Disturb that let you set your iPhone for specific moments in your life.

Apple explains: “Focus is a feature that helps reduce distractions and set limits.

“When you want to focus on a specific activity, you can customize one of the Focus options provided – for example, Work, Personal or Sleep – or create a custom Focus.

“You can use Focus to temporarily silence all notifications, or only allow specific notifications – those that apply to your task, for example – and let other people and apps know that you’re busy.”

One of the focuses is Work, which is designed for when you are, well, working.

Top 5 iOS18 Tips You May Not Know

You can hide personal apps and only show the ones you need to use for your work.

And you can even mute text notifications, only allowing messages from apps like Slack or Microsoft Teams.

When Work Focus is active, it will appear as a small badge icon at the top of the screen.

You can edit the details in Settings > Focus.

And you can turn them on or off from the Control Center, which you access by swiping down from the top right corner of your iPhone (or up from the bottom if your iPhone has a Home button).

Then just tap the Do Not Disturb moon icon and choose your preferred Focus.

You can also set focus modes to activate automatically.

For example, you can set up tips like location, app usage, or time.

APPLE EASTER EGG

The Work Focus icon will be very familiar to Apple employees – and not just from using Focus itself.

It’s designed to look exactly like an Apple employee pass.

Apple’s official team passes have an identical shape and layout, including the cutout at the top for a strap, hook, or tag.

iPhone Tricks to Try Today

Here are some of the best…

  • Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the spacebar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, allowing you to move words and sentences more easily
  • Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapping squares in the bottom right corner and press close all tabs
  • Delete many photos quickly – Long press a photo and drag your finger diagonally across Photos to select multiple images at once and click delete
  • Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of the home screen, tap the bar and enter a currency (like €200) and it will automatically convert to your local currency
  • Check if you need a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and check the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally, a battery is considered exhausted when its capacity is reduced to 80%. If it’s below, you can buy a battery change from Apple
  • Move apps faster – Hold an app until it starts to jiggle, then (while holding) tap other apps, making them stack so you can move them more easily

You might even see this type of pass if you go to your local Apple Store.

Often, Apple retail employees even use animated Memoji icons instead of their faces on employee passes.
