APPLE created an addictive game you can play every day – but you might have missed.
It’s hidden in a popular Apple app that you wouldn’t normally associate with gaming.
The game is called Quartiles and is integrated with Apple News.
It was announced via an update on Apple’s website earlier this year, so you may have missed it.
You can access it on both iPhone and iPad, as long as you are in the US or Canada.
“We’re always working to improve the experience for our News+ subscribers,” said Lauren Kern, editor in chief of Apple News.
“Our new daily word game Quartiles is a fun addition to our popular crossword offerings.”
WHAT ARE QUARTILES ON IPHONE?
Apple describes Quartiles as an “original new spelling game.”
You will need to form words by selecting blocks that contain two to four letters each.
And you will earn points based on the length of the words you create.
You’ll be able to access new games every day, with Quartiles available alongside daily and mini crosswords.
HOW TO PLAY QUARTILES ON IPHONE
There are two main points in the quartiles.
The first is that you will need an iPhone running iOS 17.5 or later.
You can check by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
HOW TO SOLVE QUARTILE PUZZLES
Here’s Apple’s official advice…
To solve a quartiles puzzle, tap the tiles in the order you want them to appear, then tap to enter the word. After tapping the blocks to place them above the grid, you can tap and hold and drag to reorder them.
For example, to mark a single point, tap “pear” and then tap . To score 2 points, tap “ap” and then “pear” to form the word “appear”. Earn 4 points by tapping “ap”, “pear” and then “ance”. Complete the Quartile and score 8 points by spelling “disappearance”.
Completed words appear in the Words found box. To see all the words you found along with their scores, tap in the Words Found box. After reaching Expert rating, the Words Found box shows how many unfound words remain. Not all possible words appear in the word list. For example, obscure and technical terms, proper nouns, and swear words never appear in the word list.
To remove blocks you haven’t yet inserted, tap . To shuffle the tiles, tap
.
And the second is that you need to be an active Apple News+ subscriber.
That’s Apple’s News subscription, which costs $12.99 per month — although you can take advantage of a one-month free trial if you’re a new member.
And if you recently purchased an eligible device, you can claim three months of subscription for free.
Apple News+ gives you access to top stories from more than 400 leading publications — and also lets you use the company’s exclusive puzzles, including Quartiles.
After signing up, go to the Search/Follow tab and choose Puzzles.
Then simply select Quartiles (and add them to the list below if you wish) to play.
You will also be able to play other Apple games in the Puzzles section.
