An iPhone X owner did everything he could to fix his phone’s camera, and then internet detectives came to his rescue.

A New Zealand-based Reddit user caught the fascination of internet users around the world with a June 23 post that asked a simple question.

“How do I remove this dot from the camera?” the user wrote above a photo of a hospital waiting room with a dark, circular stain.

“I tried cleaning the camera and violently throwing it on my bed like other posts recommended, but it won’t go away,” the user wrote.

Other Redditors chimed in, with many suggesting that the iPhone’s camera sensors had suffered damage.

Some mockingly asked if he had filmed the eclipse, knowing that prolonged exposure to the sun can damage any phone camera.

“Sensor damage looks nothing like this,” said another user.

“That’s dust on the sensor. Live with it or go to an Apple Store. You it could try hitting your phone and hoping it dislodges you.”

“A burned sensor isn’t like that, stop saying it pointed at the sun, it’s dust,” wrote another internet user.

“You can’t remove it yourself, you have to take it to a repair shop or directly to Apple.”

Although it’s uncommon, dust can get under your phone’s camera lens, causing dark spots to appear in photos.

However, this is believed to be the result of a manufacturing defect.

One user pointed out that dusting should be free if the device was still under Apple’s warranty. (Customers can check their coverage online.)

You can make an appointment online or in the Apple Support app, available at iOS.

While you can remove the camera lens and clean the dust yourself, it’s best to take it to a professional to avoid further damage.

Additionally, it is important to clean your lenses regularly. Even if dust doesn’t cause permanent damage, dirt buildup can mask scratches, cracks, and other signs of damage.

Internet users identified the stain as a speck of dust and suggested that the user go to the Apple store to have it cleaned, possibly covered by warranty.

Think of the lens as a magnifying glass. When pointing the cell phone camera at the sun, the sensor tries to detect and filter the light. However, too much can overwhelm it and cause damage.

To get around this problem, professional photographers recommend taking photos at lower exposure settings.

Do not use the timelapse function of your phone camera as this leads to prolonged exposure to the sun.

To be extra careful, you can buy a solar filter, a sheet that covers your camera lens.

Keeping your iPhone clean

Here’s how to clean your iPhone, no matter the model:

Fortunately, the process for cleaning an iPhone is the same across all models.

Start by disconnecting all cables and turning off your phone. Then take a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth and wipe it clean. Avoid getting moisture into openings such as the charging port.

Do not use window cleaners, household cleaners, compressed air, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia or abrasives.

Apple encourages customers to clean their phones immediately if they come into contact with contaminants that could cause stains or other damage.

This includes paint, dyes, makeup, dirt, foods, oils, and lotions.

You can also clean the external surfaces of your device using certain types of sanitary wipes.

Apple approves 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes, 75% ethyl alcohol wipes, or Clorox disinfectant wipes.

Don’t use products that contain bleach or hydrogen peroxide, and don’t immerse your iPhone in any cleaning agents.
