APPLE fans were left in awe after an iPhone owner shared a genius trick that’s especially useful if you use apps like Netflix.

Setting it up will take a few seconds, but it’s very useful if you regularly watch videos on your iPhone.

The trick takes advantage of Apple’s Shortcuts feature, which lets you create your own automated tricks in iPhone.

One user asked, “What are the coolest things you can do with Shortcuts? I’ve had an iPhone for years, currently 14 Pro, but I’ve never taken advantage of Shortcuts. I’m wondering what you can actually do with it?”

And another revealed how they configured their iPhone to perform a useful function powered by Netflix.

The answer, which received over 100 upvotes, says: “Shortcut that automatically turns orientation lock off when I open an app to watch something (like Netflix) and turns it back on when I exit the app.”

Orientation Lock is a feature that prevents your iPhone from switching between portrait and landscape views.

People often want to keep it on (to avoid the annoying orientation change), but this can make the video difficult to watch.

In some apps, the video will not be in landscape mode unless you turn off Orientation Lock.

Others (like Netflix or YouTube) may default to landscape and refuse to switch to portrait.

So this user created a shortcut that automatically turns it off when viewing a video app – and turns it back on when exiting the app.

Other iPhone owners were impressed by the idea, with one shocked fan replying: “Can you…..you can do this?!

“I usually keep my phone locked so it doesn’t change orientation because when I wake up and look at my phone, it always makes me confused.

“Good to know!”

HOW TO CREATE AN IPHONE SHORTCUT

Setting up a custom shortcut is easy.

You can create your own shortcuts in seconds

Just go to the Shortcuts app on your iPhone and tap the + (plus) symbol in the top right corner of the screen.

You can then select New Shortcut, choose a name, tap Done, and add actions.

After finishing the shortcut, tap Done and it will go into your shortcut collection

For the shortcut in this example, you’ll want to set orientation lock to off when an app of your choice is opened – or vice versa.

Your shortcuts can be as simple or complex as you want

And then you can create a second shortcut that does the opposite when the app is closed.

If you don’t want to rely on shortcuts, there is another option you can try.

You can go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap and set the lock rotation to double tap or triple tap.

Then, you can double tap (or triple tap if you chose Triple Tap) the back of your iPhone to quickly adjust the lock rotation.

iPhone Tricks to Try Today

Here are some of the best…

  • Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the spacebar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, allowing you to move words and sentences more easily
  • Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapping squares in the bottom right corner and press close all tabs
  • Delete many photos quickly – Long press a photo and drag your finger diagonally across Photos to select multiple images at once and click delete
  • Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of the home screen, tap the bar and enter a currency (like €200) and it will automatically convert to your local currency
  • Check if you need a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and check the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally, a battery is considered exhausted when its capacity is reduced to 80%. If it’s below, you can buy a battery change from Apple
  • Move apps faster – Hold an app until it starts to jiggle, then (while holding) tap other apps, making them stack so you can move them more easily

If you’re doing this too easily, it might be worth choosing Triple Tap over Double Tap.

And remember: you can turn this setting off at any time if you decide you don’t like it.

Likewise, you can delete a shortcut whenever you want if you feel like you’re not getting along with it.
