IPHONE owners are just discovering the meaning behind the “little hand” inside their Phone app.
It appears in your iPhone’s call log if you swipe an entry.
Try it: Swipe left on a call in the Recents stack and a yellow hand symbol will appear.
This left a iPhone Reddit owner confused, asking: “When deleting calls, what does the little hand next to the trash can mean?”
It turns out that the hand lets you report a call to Apple – useful if you’re being targeted by spammers or scammers.
But you can also use this feature to report FaceTime calls.
Apple explains: “On your FaceTime call history or in the Recents list in the Phone app, swipe left on the call, tap the Block button, then tap Block and Report Junk.”
WHEN TO REPORT A CALL ON IPHONE
You should report calls if they are spam or if they are criminals trying to scam you.
For iPhone owners, you should be on the lookout for “fraudulent phone calls or voice messages impersonating Apple support.”
But also beware of any false promotions or calls that ask for personal information or money.
“It’s safest to assume it’s a scam and contact the company directly if necessary,” Apple said.
“Never share personal information, such as credit card numbers, unless you can verify that the recipient is who they claim to be.”
HOW TO STOP SPAM CALLS ON IPHONE
There are several tactics you can use to avoid being bombarded by spam calls.
A good first stop is to turn on Silence Unknown Callers.
This is a free feature built right into iOS and can be turned off again at any time.
“With iOS 13 and later, you can turn on Silence Unknown Callers to avoid receiving calls from people you don’t know,” Apple explained.
“This blocks phone numbers that you have never contacted and have not saved in your contact list.
“If you have ever sent a text message to someone using your phone number, or if a person has shared their phone number with you via email, a call from that number will be placed.”
iPhone Tricks to Try Today
Here are some of the best…
- Typing cursor – When typing, hold down the spacebar to turn your keyboard into a trackpad, allowing you to move words and sentences more easily
- Close all Safari tabs – To do this in one go, simply hold the overlapping squares in the bottom right corner and press close all tabs
- Delete many photos quickly – Long press a photo and drag your finger diagonally across Photos to select multiple images at once and click delete
- Convert currency quickly – Swipe down from the top of the home screen, tap the bar and enter a currency (like €200) and it will automatically convert to your local currency
- Check if you need a battery upgrade – Batteries inside smartphones degrade over time. Just go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and check the Maximum Capacity reading. Generally, a battery is considered exhausted when its capacity is reduced to 80%. If it’s below, you can buy a battery change from Apple
- Move apps faster – Hold an app until it starts to jiggle, then (while holding) tap other apps, making them stack so you can move them more easily
To turn it on, go to Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers and turn on the feature.
Make sure you save all important contacts to your phone before activating this feature.
A second option is to set up spam filters.
This involves downloading a call blocking app from the Apple App Store.
They typically contain huge lists of known spam numbers, which can be used to prevent these callers from contacting you.
Once you’ve downloaded one (or several), go to Settings > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification.
Then enable the app (or apps) under Allow these Applications To block calls and provide caller ID.
Once this is done, your iPhone will compare the phone numbers of all incoming calls with those on the app’s spam lists.
If a call is considered spam, it will be automatically blocked.
You can also manually block any spam phone numbers.
