These issues are symptoms of low available memory, which can cause your device to be frustratingly slow.

Your phone has two types of memory: working memory, or RAM, and storage, also known as ROM.

RAM is volatile memory that stores data processed by your phone, such as running apps or music.

RAM determines how smooth the phone runs along with its processor.

ROM is a non-volatile memory that stores data such as photos, videos and your operating system.

Some phones have expandable memory, like an SD card, while others have a fixed amount of internal memory.

Samsung Galaxy devices have a built-in feature that can pause apps, putting a strain on the phone’s RAM.

And it can be done with just a few taps.

Start by navigating to “Settings” and swiping down to “Battery and device care.”

Tap “Memory”, followed by “Clear now” – this will pause applications running in the background.

You can modify which applications can continue running by tapping “Deleted apps”.

Samsung owners all told to never break the ‘20% rule’ or risk draining your battery forever – the best way to charge your phone

And there’s more. Samsung offers other tools to keep your phone running smoothly.

The built-in Battery and Device Care feature also provides an overview of memory, power, and security settings.

It can optimize phones to improve performance in a few easy steps steps.

Start by ensuring your device is updated with the latest software. This can be done in “Settings”.

To automatically boost your phone’s performance using the Quick Optimization feature, go to “Battery and device care” and tap “Optimize now.”

This will clear memory, delete unnecessary files and close applications running in the background.

There are also several ways to change your battery settings to help your phone last longer.

Under “Battery and Device Care,” tap “Battery” and then “Power Saving Mode.”

Turning on adaptive power saving in “More battery settings” automatically sets the power mode based on your usage patterns.

Samsung – a brief history

Here’s what you need to know…

  • Samsung is a large South Korean company made up of many companies operating globally
  • It is known locally as “chaebol”, which means “business conglomerate”
  • It was founded by Lee Byung-chul in 1938 as a trading company
  • But over several decades, it branched out into food processing, insurance, textiles and retail.
  • It was only in the late 1960s that Samsung entered the electronics industry – for which it is now best known in the West.
  • It also launched construction and shipbuilding businesses in the 1970s
  • Today, Samsung’s most important sources of income are its smartphones and computer chips
  • The company is responsible for about a fifth of South Korea’s total exports and about 17% of the country’s GDP.
  • More than 270,000 employees are employed by Samsung worldwide
  • And in 2023, Samsung Electronics earned the equivalent of US$194 billion in revenue

You can also use the device maintenance tool to free up storage space.

Samsung claims that the feature works by cleaning up “unnecessary residual files”, that is, caches, logs and error reports generated by running programs or installing applications.

You will see a “Storage” tab under “Battery and device care”. Tapping it will take you to a list of items.

Long-press and tap the circles to place a check mark next to the ones you want to remove, and click “Delete” after making your selections.
