The summer heat could be slowing down your phone and draining its battery — but there’s an easy solution.
Samsung has a long list of tips for keeping your device safe during the warmer months.
If you find that your phone is getting too hot, there are a few ways to reduce the temperature.
Avoid making the dreaded “cradle” mistake or leaving your device on the phone stand on hot days.
These tools are typically mounted on the windshield or dashboard, allowing you to use a navigation app hands-free while you drive.
While it can be useful, a phone holder will expose your device to more sunlight – especially when using mobile data, Bluetooth or charging.
The easiest solution is to take your phone out of the sun and let it cool down.
You can also remove the phone case to prevent the device from heating up further.
Another simple solution is to close all applications that tax your phone’s power and working memory.
Close any applications you’re not using, especially if they’re graphics-intensive, like mobile games.
It’s also worth reducing the screen brightness. While this may make viewing in the sun easier, it also drains power from your phone, increasing its temperature.
You must ensure that adaptive brightness is turned off. This feature automatically increases screen brightness when it detects sunlight.
Start by swiping down from the top of the screen to open the Quick Panel.
Tap the arrow next up the bar to adjust the screen brightness, and then turn off the button next to “Adaptive brightness”.
You can also try lowering the screen resolution if the option is available on your device.
A higher resolution means more pixels are being displayed at the same time. This uses more memory and battery power, causing the phone to heat up.
In Settings, navigate to Display, followed by Screen Resolution.
Your phone also comes with a built-in feature that optimizes performance to help your device run more smoothly.
The Battery and Device Care tool will reduce the memory in use and close any applications that are running in the background.
As a last resort, Samsung suggests temporarily putting your phone in airplane mode
This will disable non-essential items characteristics on your phone, which can help it cool down.
Samsung charging tip – how to charge better
Here’s Samsung’s official advice…
To get the most out of your smartphone’s battery, you’ll need to charge it properly.
Most smartphones have a lithium-ion battery that lasts longer when charged regularly.
Unlike the nickel batteries used in older phones, lithium-ion batteries work best when kept above 50% charge.
Repeatedly allowing the battery to fully discharge may shorten its lifespan and decrease its overall capacity.
If this happens, you will need to charge the battery more frequently and it may only last a few hours before needing to be charged, for example.
Leaving your phone connected to the charger (when the phone is fully charged) while using it can shorten the battery life if you do it repeatedly.
Remember, a hot phone doesn’t always indicate a problem.
It is normal for the temperature of your cell phone to increase, especially if you are carrying out an activity that uses a lot of processing power.
This includes video calls, mobile gaming or video streaming.
In addition to the tips listed above, Samsung recommends updating your device to ensure it works at its best.
