This change comes after a period of incidents of unauthorized account access.

During incidents, Roku accounts were compromised and used to make fraudulent purchases.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In early 2024, reports emerged of illegally accessed Roku accounts.

Hackers used stolen login credentials – usernames and passwords – to gain entry.

Once inside, they could purchase movies and TV shows or even subscribe to streaming services on behalf of the unsuspecting user.

These incidents have raised concerns about the overall security of Roku accounts.

“After completing our investigation of this first incident, we notified affected customers in early March and continue to closely monitor account activity to protect our customers and their personal information,” Roku said in a statement. declaration on your website.

“Through this monitoring, we identified a second incident, which impacted approximately 576,000 additional accounts,” they added.

ROKU’S REPLY

Roku responded by enabling mandatory 2FA for all users.

This additional layer of security requires users to enter a unique code in addition to their passwords.

These codes are typically sent via email or generated by an authentication app.

2FA makes it significantly more difficult for unauthorized individuals to gain access, even if they have stolen a user’s password.

Roku emphasized in its statement that implementing 2FA is not necessarily an indication that its systems have been compromised.

“There is no indication that Roku was the source of the account credentials used in these attacks or that Roku’s systems were compromised in any of the incidents,” the company said.

“Instead, it is likely that the login credentials used in these attacks were taken from another source, such as another online account,” they added.

It noted that in less than 400 cases, malicious actors logged in and made unauthorized purchases using the stored payment method.

However, “they did not gain access to any sensitive information, including full credit card numbers or other complete payment information.”
