SOME Google One users have become frustrated with the service as two popular features of the app are being discontinued.
Google One is a subscription service developed by Google that offers expanded cloud storage and other benefits.
Now, two popular features are being retired: free shipping on photo prints and Google One VPN.
Google One users are venting their frustrations on social media following the company’s announcement.
“I received this message from Google One about changes to my subscription (located in the US),” says one thread.
“If they are ‘expanding access’ to some features for all users AND eliminating other benefits, all that’s left is cloud storage and a 3% discount in the Google store, which is a joke,” they added.
The user argued that Google needs to adjust its subscriptions if all they are going to offer are “basic features”.
“Between this and the Google Podcast app shutting down, I’m officially over it,” they said.
Since going live three days ago, the thread has accumulated dozens of upvotes and replies.
“I’m so angry at them for removing the VPN,” one person commented.
“Instead of improving it or implementing useful things, they are giving us photo editing tools that no one cares about and making things free for all Google Photos users?” they continued.
“Actually, someone explain to me what the point of a Google One subscription is beyond storage. I couldn’t care less about your photo/video editing AI tools,” they concluded.
“Man, I just found out about the VPN and it’s been great having it. I don’t need anything crazy…” said a second person.
“I just want to be able to listen to Soondcloud while I’m at work and it was nice to have this easily installed on all my devices,” they added.
“We are going to eliminate features and not lower the price or increase your storage space,” echoed another user.
“I will stop my subscription when it ends. I’m already looking for more private Google Photos alternatives,” they added.
Google Incognito Mode – How Does It Work?
Here’s what you need to know…
- Incognito mode is extremely useful because it can prevent your browser from saving information about what you do online on your computer
- For example, any website you visit in incognito mode will not appear in your browsing history
- You also won’t store new cookies linked to your own identity (read our cookie explainer here) – these are small computer files that let websites know if you’ve been to their pages before
- It also won’t save any website data – for example, if you’re logged into a website, you’ll be logged out in incognito mode
- Or if you want to search for something on the internet but don’t want sites to constantly display ads for that product in the future, incognito mode will prevent those sites from knowing that you were interested in an item
However, not all users are upset about the changes, saying that the platform is mainly for storage.
“Google One has always been primarily concerned with the storage required for Photos and Drive, which is still reasonable,” said one person.
“All the other perks are there just to sweeten the deal,” they added.
The free photo upload benefit will disappear on May 15th for users in Canada, UK, US and EU.
It’s a huge blow to Google One users who depended on the benefit to have their memories delivered to their door for free.
Google One’s built-in VPN will also be discontinued later this year.
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and is a tool that you can use to browse the Internet securely.
A VPN extends a private network across a public network, allowing users to share and receive data without the prying eyes of nefarious third parties.
Google One starts at $1.99 per month and increases based on the user’s storage needs.
