The essential accessory in donald trumpin silent money trial? Binoculars.
In a New York courtroom where cameras are not permitted and where most of the vantage points that offer the best views of the former president are captured, these devices are being used by enterprising reporters, courtroom designers and legal analysts who strive to see each of your grimaces and pouts and maybe catch him nappingalso.
“This is the latest edition, to see if he is sleeping or if his eyes are closed,” Adam Reiss, a veteran NBC News reporter who has used binoculars to cover other high-profile trials, said Tuesday.
Laura Jarrett, senior legal correspondent for NBC News and co-anchor of “Saturday TODAY,” said in a trial feed that reporters are turning to binoculars because it is difficult to see Trump any other way.
“The court designers are using [them]as well,” Jarrett said, adding that as the trial progressed, binocular sightings became more common.
Surveying the courtroom, Jarrett said, “I can see at least four couples in the main courtroom here today, but there could be more.”
This number varies from day to day.
NBC News’ Katherine Doyle said she saw just one pair on Friday and that they were in the hands of an ABC News reporter.
Most reporters, however, are in the room adjacent to the main courtroom, where they follow the proceedings on a large screen.
“It’s like what you would find at a sports bar,” he said. Phil Hirschkorn, who is covering the trial for Britain’s ITV News. “The judge is in the top left corner. The witness is testifying in the upper right corner. The lawyers are in the bottom left corner. Trump is in the bottom right.”
Hirschkorn said Trump may appear larger than life to some people, but that on screen “he’s smaller than life, and that’s where it helps to have the binoculars.”
Plus, in a trial like this, “a lot of evidence is on the screen,” Hirschkorn said.
“This is a case of documents and without binoculars it is very difficult to see them,” he said. “Like text messages. It’s very small print.”
The most popular brand of binoculars among Trump watchers appears to be from a company called SkyGenius, which sells high-powered binoculars. $79.99 model with a “non-slip grip” that is preferred by bird watchers for a Children’s version for US$18.99 which comes in a variety of bright colors.
“One reporter said he saw others using it, so he bought it,” Jarrett wrote.
Reiss said he relies on an unnamed brand he’s been buying from Amazon for years, which cost about $16 each.
“They’re cheap, but they work well,” he said. “I just need them to be strong enough to see about 30 feet away.”
Because of the constraints of the cramped courtroom and the fact that wherever Trump goes there is usually a group of lawyers and a Secret Service detail in tow, reporters are often unable to tell who is accompanying him until they are seated.
“Like today was the first time your son Eric showed up,” Reiss said. “The binoculars help me identify the members of the entourage.”
