Ahead of her meeting with House Speaker Mike Johnson on Tuesday, Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene shared her list of demands for the House speaker amid her push to remove him from the House’s top job.
Greene’s four requests – which she said were “simple and easy for Mike Johnson to follow” in one post on X — include a return to the “Hastert Rule,” which means that no legislation is brought to a vote without the support of a majority of the majority party; there will be no more funding for Ukraine; defund the special counsel’s investigation into former President Donald Trump; and avoid a government shutdown before the election by passing a continuing resolution to automatically enact a 1% spending cut.
“It would be a huge victory for our Republican majority and, most importantly, a huge victory for the people who gave this to us,” the Georgia Republican wrote in X of the demands.
Johnson and Green are expected to meet for a second time on Tuesday afternoon, after Johnson said he had a “long and constructive meeting” with Greene and Republican Rep. Thomas Massie on Monday. The meeting, which lasted nearly two hours, occurred as Greene said he will force a vote to remove Johnson from the leadership role this week.
Johnson said his series of meetings with Greene and Massie “are not a negotiation.”
“This is not a negotiation at all. What we are trying to do and what my job is is to improve every day processes, procedures, our political preferences or legislation and make sure that we can build the right consensus to bring everyone together,” he said Johnson at the Republican Party’s weekly news conference on Tuesday.
Asked whether he would defund the special counsel’s investigation into Trump, as Greene requested, Johnson did not rule out that possibility.
“We’re looking at this very closely because I think the problem has reached a crescendo,” Johnson said.
For the first time publicly, Johnson said he intends to continue to be the leader of the House Republican Conference in the future.
“I intend to lead this conference in the future, and the most important thing we have to do now is to govern the country well, to show the American people who we are – and that is what we have done,” Johnson said.
Asked by ABC News on Monday whether she plans to move forward with a motion to vacate, Greene said she “will have more information” after Tuesday’s meeting.
The Georgia congresswoman said last week that she was moving forward with her recall effort despite resistance from many Republicans and a statement from Democrats that they would intervene to help save Johnson. Trump also weighed in on Greene’s decision to remove Johnson.
Trump spoke privately with Greene over the weekend and asked her to drop her push to remove Johnson, a source close to the president confirmed to ABC News. During the discussion, Trump told Greene that the party needs to be unified, according to the source.
The former president’s team reflected on the best way to show support for Johnson. Trump brought Johnson on stage at the RNC spring retreat luncheon over the weekend and praised him “for his leadership and work in the U.S. House,” emphasizing “the need for party unity, collaboration and expansion of the Republican Party’s majority in the Chamber”, according to the campaign.

Greene criticized Johnson for working with Democrats on several key pieces of legislation — including keeping the government open and providing foreign aid. Johnson fired back, saying he is a longtime Republican but that he must do his job to serve the entire House with a greatly reduced Republican majority.
“I would really like to advance our conservative politics a lot more on a daily basis here. But the reality is that we are working with the smallest majority in US history, with a one-vote margin,” Johnson said.
