WASHINGTON — Far-right Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., made good on her threat Wednesday and introduced a motion to remove Republican President Mike Johnson from power over his decision to hand over billions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine.
She was booed by colleagues when she formally announced the effort on the House floor.
Johnson’s Republican allies are in a strong position to defeat Greene’s efforts, given that Democratic leaders said on April 30 that their rank-and-file members will step in and vote to “introduce” or reject Greene’s motion to vacate the speaker’s chair. .
That would, at least temporarily, save Johnson’s job, although the fact that Democrats voted to keep him in power is sure to infuriate conservative activists and outside groups. And nothing would stop Greene or any other conservative opponent from forcing another vote on Johnson’s fate in the future.
“Mike Johnson is officially the Democratic Speaker of the House. …What obscene behind-the-scenes deal did Johnson make to win Democratic support?” Greene said in a statement before filing her motion. Johnson said he made no such deal with Democrats.
“He should resign, change parties and continue voting for Biden’s invasion of America’s open border, endless wars, full abortion on demand, trans agenda for children, warrantless spying on the American people, weaponizing the government against the President Trump and his supporters, and every other Democrat wish list item he delivered,” Greene continued.
