Former President Donald Trump threw cold water Saturday on any speculation that he was considering former presidential rival Nikki Haley as his running mate, saying she was “not under consideration.”
Trump made the comments on his Truth Social platform following a previous report from Axioswhich cited unnamed sources that the former president would consider Haley if he felt she could help him win the general election and cover his legal fees if he lost.
Just hours after the article was published, Trump took to the Internet to set the record straight. his quest for the vice presidency.
“Nikki Haley is not being considered for the vice president position, but I wish her the best!” the former president wrote.
Haley, former governor of South Carolina and former UN ambassador under Trump, dropped out of the Republican Party primary after the former president won several nationwide primaries and caucuses in Super Tuesday.
As a candidate, Haley sought to push Republican voters toward a future without Trump, arguing that she would be the face of generational change in the Republican Party, while also seeking to appeal to conservatives, moderates and independents who distrusted the former president.
But Haley, similar to former colleagues like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, was unable to break Trump’s hold on the Republican electorate.
Early in Haley’s campaign, she avoided direct attacks on Trump. But as the primary elections approached, she took on the former president directly, noting that his legal troubles could imperil the Republican Party in the fall. She also mentioned her old age.
When Haley left the race, she did not throw her support behind Trump’s re-election bid and gave no timeline for a potential endorsement. Biden, who praised Haley after she ended her campaign, sought to appeal to his former supporters.
And despite his departure from the Republican race, Haley continues to gain thousands of votes in the primariesparticularly in critical suburban and suburban counties where Democrats have made considerable gains in recent election cycles.
