WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration has told top lawmakers it is sending a new package of more than $1 billion in weapons and ammunition to Israel, two congressional aides said Tuesday.

It is the first arms shipment to Israel announced by the administration since it suspended another arms transfer – consisting of 3,500 bombs – earlier this month. The administration said it halted the earlier transfer to prevent Israel from using the bombs in its escalating offensive on the populous city of Rafah in southern Gaza.

The congressional aides spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an arms transfer that has not yet been disclosed.

The package sent includes about $700 million in tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles and $60 million in mortars, the advisers said.

There was no immediate indication of when the weapons would be shipped. Israel is now seven months into its war against Hamas in Gaza.

The Wall Street Journal first reported plans to transfer the package.
